CARSON, Calif.-- The SF State Gator trio of
Michaela Booker,
Nicole Hicks and
Angela Van Sickel combined for 53 of the Gators' 74 points in their 74-52 road conference victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills this evening at the Torodome in Carson.
“I am so proud of our team, 11 days on the road and three wins is huge, furthermore I am excited to have Michaela (Booker) breakout as she is a major component in our three-guard offense,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace. “Also, I am proud to watch Angela (Van Sickel) blossom into a solid player and Nicole's (Hicks) second half was simply amazing.” Booker was 7-of-15 from the field including going 1-for-2 from three-point land. She also was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in leading to her career high 20 points. Hick scored all of her points in the second half, going 5-for-10 from the field and 9-of-13 from the line and connecting on her only three-point field goal attempt.
SF State (5-13, 4-8 CCAA) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game as Van Sickel scored six of her 13 points.
Van Sickel's third three-pointer with 10:09 left in the half gave the Gators a 24-13 lead. The Toros outscored the visitors 17-6 in the next eight minutes and cut the deficit to 32-30 on an old-fashioned three-point play.
The Gators finished the half on a 10-2 run with Booker's lay-up giving them a 40-32 heading into the locker room.
SF State came out on fire in the new stanza as it increased its lead to 51-34 on a lay-up by Van Sickel in the first six minutes.
The Toros (2-17, 1-11) would not go away as they held the Gators scoreless in the next four minutes and cut the lead to just 51-44 (the closest the hosts would get).
The visitors increased back to double digits when Hicks' connected on both of her free throws at the 10:08 mark of the second stanza as SF State took a 54-44 lead. The Gators increased their lead to 73-51 (their largest of the game) on a made free three throw by Booker with a little over two minutes left in the game.
Samantha Campos' made free throw made the final 74-52 Gators.
Hillarie Perrin led the Toros with 14 points while Porcha Davis chipped in 10 points, who shot just 35% from the field including a meager 12% from three-point range.
SF State, who is in a three-way tie for 8
th place in the CCAA with Cal State San Bernardino and Sonoma State, shot 48% from the field and 50% from three-point range. The Gators also controlled the glass as they out-rebounded the Toros 40-33 lead by
Farrah Shokoor with 13 rebounds.
The Gators will return home for a brief two-game home stand this Thursday, January 26 at 5:30pm, when they host the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino a the Swamp.
