Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO Marlene MacMillan scored 12 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lift the visiting Cal State East Bay women's basketball team past San Francisco State 64-39 on Saturday at The Swamp.

The Pioneers (5-8, 2-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association) also received double-digit scoring totals from two reserves, including Brianna Terrance, who tallied a game-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Sarah Finlay finished with 11.

The Gators (2-11, 1-6 CCAA) connected on just 14 of 56 field goal attempts (25 percent) and were out-rebounded by a 53-25 margin, including a 32-12 spread on the defensive glass. East Bay also controlled the middle for much of the game, outscoring the hosts 28-8 in the paint.

Nicole Hicks tossed in 12 points to pace SF State, while Michaela Booker added 10 in the defeat.

“The CCAA is an extremely difficult conference to navigate and our players have yet to understand the intensity and the commitment need to play at the college level,” said Gator head coach Joaquin Wallace.  “As a coaching staff, we were disappointed with the effort tonight.”

SF State led 9-7 following a pair of free throws by Candyce Matthews with seven minutes elapsed in the first half; however, the Pioneers unleashed a 13-2 blitz, capped by a Carly Bettancourt basket with 9:40 left, to seize command at 20-11.

The Gators scored the next six points on a Lauren Varney tip-in, a Hicks jumper and Farrah Shokoor's layup to pull within 20-17.  That would be closest the Purple and Gold would get for the remainder of the contest, though, as East Bay closed with a 15-8 spurt to take a 35-25 lead into the locker room.

SF State was unable to get its offense untracked in the second half, misfiring on 14 of its first 15 shots as the Pioneers opened up a 49-27 bulge by the 9:52 mark.  A Hicks triple from long distance ended the drought, but Terrance quickly tallied seven straight points, converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 6:22 remaining to increase the margin to 56-30 as East Bay cruised the rest of the way.

The Gators return to action on Thursday, Jan. 12, when they square off against Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, Calif., to kick off a five-game road trip.  Opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
