SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – After a lengthy holiday break, the San Francisco State wrestling team resumed its 2011-12 schedule Saturday, posting a 1-2 record in three matches at the prestigious NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals inside the Prairie Capital Convention Center.
The Gators (3-3) opened with a narrow 17-16 loss to 11th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside in the main bracket before suffering a 25-12 setback to Limestone College (S.C.) in the back draw. The Purple and Gold then took out its frustrations in the extra consolation round with a convincing 31-13 victory over Central Missouri.
Both
Andy Yu (125) and
Dylan Phillipy (149) went 3-0 for SF State, while
Vicente Aboytes (157),
Isaiah Jimenez (165) and
Anthony Gonzalez (285) each won twice.
The Gators started strong against Parkside, capturing five of their first six bouts to build a commanding 16-3 lead on the team scoreboard. However, the Rangers rallied with four straight victories, including an important win by technical fall at 174 to complete the rally.
SF State drew first blood as Yu emerged with a 5-3 decision over Jake Papke at 125, but Parkside quickly evened the match when Collin Crume edged
Julian Perez by a 6-5 count at 133.
The Gators caught fire at this juncture, reeling off four consecutive wins to stake a seemingly comfortable 16-3 advantage.
Daniel Flores administered a 4-0 blanking against Arik Yde at 141, Phillipy doubled up on Aaron Heidersheid by a 12-6 score at 149, while Aboytes overcame an early deficit to claim a 9-5 triumph over Dave Edwards at 157.
Isaiah Jimenez, ranked sixth in the latest Division II poll at 165, soon followed with an 11-3 victory by major decision over Montrail Johnson. However, the Purple and Gold came up empty in the four ensuing matches, allowing the Rangers to escape.
Second-ranked Luke Rynish gave Parkside a huge boost with five key points after dealing
Arman Ostadsharif a 19-3 defeat by technical fall at 174, while
Zach Jimenez dropped a close 6-4 decision to another nationally ranked wrestler in No. 8 Matt Gille at 184.
With SF State clinging to a precarious 16-11 lead and the match hanging in balance, the Rangers finished the comeback when Davien Willis recorded four straight points to pull away for a 6-2 triumph over
Andrew Reggi at 197, while James Malechek came away with a 4-1 decision over Gonzalez in the heavyweight class.
Against Limestone, the Gators drew even with the Saints at 9-9 on the strength of Phillipy's team-leading fifth pin of the year against Shawn Landgraff at the 2:36 mark of the first period in 149-pound division after Yu opened with a 2-0 victory over Eric Rholetter at 125.
SF State's momentum was quickly subdued, however, as Limestone responded with five consecutive wins to forge a commanding 25-9 advantage it would not relinquish. The Gators squared off against a pair of nationally ranked foes during that stretch as No. 7 Bryan Sopko claimed an 8-3 decision over Ostadsharif at 174, while No. 2 Dan Scanlan was an 11-0 winner by major decision over Reggi at 197.
The final points of the match were then provided by Gonzalez, who engineered a 6-2 victory over Charles Weber at heavyweight.
In the extra consolation match against Central Missouri, Yu and Phillipy kept their perfect records on the day intact, while Perez and Reggi broke through with big wins of their own. Jimenez also rebounded in impressive fashion with a second-period pin of the Mules' Todd Briar at the 3:50 mark to raise his record to 12-4 on the year.
SF State will return to the mat on Friday, Jan. 13, when it plays host to Cal Poly at The Swamp, starting at 7 p.m.
