SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State men's soccer team rallied for a pair of goals in the second half to defeat visiting Cal Poly Pomona, 2-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match Sunday at Cox Stadium.
Despite trailing in shots on goal (5-4), the Gators won for the second time this weekend after toppling Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, improving to 3-10-3 on the season and 2-8-3 in conference play, while the Broncos slip to 3-9-3 and 1-9-3 in the CCAA.
CPP opened the scoring just before halftime when Kris Korich centered a pass from the left side to Matt Boudreau, who beat SF State goalkeeper
Anthony Rodriguez in the box and tapped the ball into the back of the net during the 44th minute.
The Broncos switched goalkeepers from Kris Minton to Anthony Iniguez after intermission, and the Gators took advantage of the opportunity, netting the equalizer in the 57th minute when a
Jason Borges header off a feed from
Nathan Fernandez found daylight from 10 yards out.
SF State then caught a break in the 79th minute when
Kristian Fuentes' dribbler from the far left side skirted off the foot of Boudreau, who attempted a clearing pass. However, the ball slid back into the goal, putting the Purple and Gold up, 2-1.
The Gators survived a scare in the 85th minute when CPP's Abraham Gomez launched a shot from roughly 18 yards out that rung the crossbar and bounced straight down. However, SF State managed to clear the ball and run out the clock to seal the victory.
Rodriguez made four saves in the winning effort for the Purple and Gold, while Minton and Iniguez recorded one stop apiece for the Broncos.
The Gators will wrap up the home portion of their 2012 schedule next weekend when they battle Cal State L.A. (Oct. 26) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (Oct. 28) at Cox Stadium. Friday's clash with the Golden Eagles is slated to get underway at 12:30 p.m., while Sunday's showdown with the Toros is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start as part of SF State's Senior Day festivities.
