SAN FRANCISCO---- The SF State Gators rallied from a two goal deficit in the last 14 minutes of regulation to play to a 2-2 draw with the visiting Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles at Cox Stadium this afternoon.
Jason Borges scored the game-tying goal off a ball from
Nathan Fernandez with 9 minutes left in regulation.
The first half was dominated by the Gators as they outshot their visitors 9-3 including 3-0 in shot on goal attempts, but they could not put the ball in the net.
Sam Merritt recorded the hosts' first shot in the first minute but it sailed high. Then in the 21
st minute,
Kevin Johnson's shot attempt to give SF State the early lead was stopped by the Golden Eagles' Waleed Cassis.
The Golden Eagles' first shot attempt came in the fifth minute off the foot of Juan Ochoa but it was blocked by the Gator defense.
SF State (3-10-4, 2-8-4 CCAA) had two chances in the 40
th minute to take the lead but Cassis stopped both attempts one by
Edgar Villagrana and the other by
Kristian Fuentes.
Cal State L.A. had the last shot attempt go wide right off the foot of Adam Hughes to send the game into halftime tied at 0-0.
The Golden Eagles came out strong in the second half as Miguel Hernandez gave the visitors the 1-0 lead as he scored on a breakaway off a ball from Oscar Cabrillo in the 50
th minute. Six minutes later, Cal State L.A. (10-3-3, 9-2-3 CCAA) doubled its lead as Antti Arvola connected on a rebound of his missed penalty kick attempt.
The score remained 2-0 visitors until the 76
th minute when
Jorge Valadas connected on a ball from
Jason Borges and flicked it over the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper's head to cut into the visitors' lead, 2-1.
Five minutes later, SF State tied the match at 2-2 when Borges scored on a ball off the cross bar by
Nathan Fernandez.
The Gators had two chances to take the lead in the final minutes, but Cassis stopped both one by
Sam Merritt in the 82
nd minute and the last one by Valadas in the 85
th minute to send the match into overtime.
In the first overtime neither team registered a shot attempt to send the match into the second ten minute period.
Sasha Chalak had the first shot attempt in the overtime in the 101
st minute, but it sailed wide right. Three minutes later, Andy Lopez's shot sailed wide right for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A.'s Halil Tozar had the final shot attempt of the match sail high in the 106
th minute as the match ended in a 2-2 double overtime draw.
Cassis ended with six saves in goal for the visitors while
Anthony Rodriguez had two saves in goal for SF State.
Each team recorded 16 shot attempts with the Gators holding a 6-2 advantage in shot on goal attempts. Cal State L.A. held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
SF State will return to the pitch for the final time this season this Sunday, October 28
th at 11:30am, when the Gators host Cal State Dominguez Hills. Prior to the match, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their own in
