Edgar Villagrana connected on a cross from
Jairo Magana in the 75
th minute as the Gators defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills in their regular season home finale. This was Villagrana's first game-winning goal of the season and fourth goal of the year.
With the win over the Toros, SF State dropped Cal State Dominguez Hills into second place in the CCAA South Division and they will face Chico State in this weekend's CCAA tournament championship semi-final in Carson, Calif.
The win also snapped the Toros' seven-game winning streak. This also was the Gators' first win over CSUDH since the 1999 since when they won 2-0. During that span, the Toros held a 0-11-2 advantage over SF State.
Miguel Vazquez gave the visitors the early 1-0 lead as he connected on a cross from Jio Santana in the 11
th minute of the match from 10 yards out.
SF State (4-10-4, 3-8-4 CCAA) had a chance to tie the match in the 12
th minute, but
Sasha Chalak's shot went wide right. Then in the 18
th minute, senior
Luis Fidel Medina connected on a free kick from 38-yards out to tie the match at 1-1. This was his first goal of the 2012 season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-5-1, 11-4 CCAA) had chance to take the lead, but
Anthony Rodriguez stopped Aaron Salazar's shot in the 29
th minute. Salazar had another chance to give the Toros the lead, but it sailed high in the 45
th minute to send the game into the half tied at 1-1.
Early in the second half, Wyatt Stucker went to give the visitors the lead back but Rodriguez stopped his attempt from going in the net in the 50
th minute.
Then in the 61
st minute, the Toros were called for a penalty in the box but Trey Mitchell stopped
Sam Merritt's penalty kick attempt along with
Jason Borges attempt from going in to keep the match tied at 1-1.
SF State kept its offensive strong and it paid off as in the 75
th minute, Villagrana connected on what proved to be the game-winner off a cross from
Jairo Magana.
The Toros just had one chance to tie the match but it was stopped in the 87
th minute by Rodriguez.
Cal State Dominguez Hills held a 17-16 advantage in shot attempts as well as a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Toros also had a 10-5 corner kick advantage.
Rodriguez had 5 saves in goal for SF State while Mitchell also had 5 in goal for CSUDH.
