CARSON, Calif.— Two unanswered second half goals by the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros keyed their 3-1 win over the visiting SF State Gators this evening in a CCAA match at Toro Stadium in Carson, Calif.
The Toros (5-5-1, 5-4 CCAA) won their second straight match and fourth in their last five with the victory over SF State. They outshot the Gators 14-6 including 9-4 in shot on goal attempts. The hosts also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead in just the second minute of the match as Miguel Vazquez connected on a cross from Jio Santana and Jordan Hatanka.
The Gators (1-7-3, 0-5-3 CCAA) had two chances to tie match in the next minute but Trey Mitchell stopped both of them off the feet of
Luis Fidel Medina and
Jason Borges.
Then in the 20
th minute, SF State tied the match at 1-1 as
Edgar Villagrana connected on a through ball from
Luis Fidel Medina and shot it past the Toros' goalkeeper.
The hosts went to take the lead on their next possession but Santana's shot was stopped by the Gators'
Anthony Rodriguez. They had another chance stopped by Rodriguez in the 39
th minute as the senior goalkeeper stopped Sebastian Cortez's shot on goal attempt.
Right before the end of the half, Mitchell made another save this time he stopped
Luis Mendoza's shot on goal attempt to send the match tied into halftime.
Cal State Dominguez Hills came out firing in the second half as the Toros had three shot attempts in the first 10 minutes of the second half including two shot on goal attempts by Jordan Hatanaka.
Then in the 60
th minute, Aaron Salazar connected on what proved to be the game-winner on a cross from Andrew Johnson and Jordan Hatanaka. They sealed the match in the 75
th minute as Santana beat the Gator defender and connected on a shot from six-yards out to give the Toros the 3-1 lead.
Mitchell recorded three saves in goal for Cal State Dominguez Hills while Rodriguez had six saves in goal for the Gators.
SF State will continue its season long five-match road trip this Sunday, Oct. 7 in Los Angeles for an 11:30am starting conference match with Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles defeated Cal Poly Pomona 2-1 earlier today in conference match in Los Angeles.
