Gators Battle Back But Fall 2-1 in OT

Box Score LOS ANGELES----    For the third Sunday match in a row, the SF State Gators played an overtime match but this time they lost 2-1.  The Gators battled back from a 1-0 first half deficit to tie the match in the 48th minute, but the Golden Eagles' Halil Tozar scored off a rebound off a Gator defender for the golden goal in the 93rd minute to give Cal State L.A. the victory.
 
Cal State L.A. (8-3-1, 7-2-1 CCAA) outshot the Gators 20-10 including 10-2 in shots on goal attempts.  Each team recorded three corner kicks in the 93 minutes. 
 
Anthony Rodriguez recorded a season high 10 saves in goal for the Gators while the Golden Eagles' Waleed Cassis had two saves.
 
The Golden Eagles' Halil Tozar recorded the first shot of the match as Rodriguez from coming into the net in the third minute of the match.  SF State took the ball down the pitch and the Golden Eagles' Cassis made one of his two saves as he stopped Jairo Magana's attempt of giving the Gators the 1-0 lead.
 
Magana had another attempt sail high in the 9th minute as did Chris Behroozian in the 13th minute for the Gators.
 
Following Behroozian's missed shot, Luis Trujillo attempt to give the hosts a 1-0 lead was stopped by Rodriguez.  The hosts kept battling and it helped as Adam Hughes scored his second goal of the season off a ball from Tozar and Antti Arvola in the 17th minute to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
 
SF State went to tie the match in the 20th minute, but Sam Merritt's shot sailed wide. Then once again in the 42nd minute, the Gators had a chance to tie the match but Luis Mendoza's shot was blocked by the Golden Eagle defense to send the match into the half with a Cal State L.A. 1-0 lead.
 
The Gators came out firing in the second half as in the 48th minute; Luis Mendoza tied the match at one as he connected on a cross from outside the box from Luis Fidel Medina.  This was his first goal of the season.
 
SF State (1-8-3, 0-6-3 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead be blocked by the Golden Eagle defense as Eric Espinoza's shot was blocked in the 66th minute. 
 
Jorge Valadas went to put the Gators up 2-1, but Massis stopped his attempt in the 77th minute. 
 
The visitors had their final attempt to take the lead fall short as Behroozian's shot hit the post in the 81st minute.
 
Then with five minutes left in the match, Tozar's attempt to give the hosts lead was stopped by Rodriguez to send the match into overtime.
 
In the first three minute of the overtime period, Tozar scored the golden goal off a rebound off a Gator defender to give the Golden Eagles the 2-1 victory.
 
The Gators will have the final leg of their season long five-match road trip this coming weekend as they travel to the Central Valley.  This Friday, Oct. 12th, they will face Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif., for a 4:30pm match.  Then a week from today, SF State will travel to Chico, Calif., for an 2pm starting match with Chico State.
