SAN FRANCISCO – Cal State East Bay held the SF State Gators to just 22% shooting from the field to key the Pioneers 46-38 road victory at The Swamp. SF State (2-3, 1-2 CCAA) was led by Farrah Shokoor's second double-double of the season by scoring 18 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. She also had four steals and four assists in the Gators' loss.
"I thought our 2nd half in regards to defensive intensity was much better than our 1st half." said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. " However, if you can hold a team to 46 pts in a game, you are in a great position to win the game, however, when you struggle making FT's and not taking advantage."
SF State took a 11-7 lead mid-way through the first half on a Shokoor lay-up. Cal State Bay then went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-11 lead and never looked back.
Marlene Macmillan's jumper with 20 seconds left in the first half gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the half, 26-16 heading into the locker room.
Cal State East Bay (3-2, 1-0 CCAA) increased their lead to 37-18 on a Brianna Terrance lay-up in the first nine minutes of the second half.
The Gators would not give up as they cut the Pioneer lead to 46-38 with 2:25 left in the game on two made free throws by Shokoor, but SF State could not get any closer.
Neither team scored in the final two minutes as the visitors hung for the 46-38 victory.
Tori Breshers led the way for the Pioneers with 13 points off the bench while Micah Walker added 10 points.
Besides Shokoor's 18 points,
Nicole Hicks added 15 points for SF State, who as a team went 0-for-15 from three-point land.
SF State will return to the court tomorrow evening at 5:30pm, when the Gators host Cal St. Monterey Bay who defeated Sonoma State this evening 78-45 in Rohnert Park, Calif.
