BELMONT, Calif.— The visiting SF State Gators used two runs one a 17-0 run in the first half and a 14-0 run in the second half to key their 68-46 non-conference road victory over the Notre Dame de Namur University Argonauts this evening at the Walter Gleason Gymnasium in Belmont, California. The Gators head into the break with a 5-3 record winning four of their last six games including their last three straight.
“We grinded this game out with a great defensive effort in the second half,” said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. “Notre Dame de Namur played inspired basketball; however, we were able to executive both offensively and defensively when it counted most.”
The Argonauts (1-8) jumped out to a 14-5 lead including scoring the first seven points of the game in the first eight minutes of the game. During that span, Trisha Malaspina scored five of her game high 19 points to lead the way for the hosts.
SF State's defensive then stepped up as they held the Argonauts scoreless in the next seven minutes as they visitors went on a 17-0 run to take a 22-14 lead.
The hosts would not cave in as they cut the deficit 24-22 on two made free throws by Malaspina with 3:22 left in the half. The Gators ended the half outscoring their hosts 9-4 to take a 33-26 lead into the locker room.
Early in the second half, Notre Dame de Namur came out strong as the Argonauts cut the Gator lead to 37-34.
Once again, the Gator defense stepped up as they held NDNU scoreless and went on an 8-0 run capped by
Desiree Collins' jumper at the 13:33 mark to 45-34.
The Argonauts cut the deficit to single digits (49-42) once again with 8:23 on the clock on a three by Maya Arellane which was the last time the Gator lead was under double digits.
SF State went on a 14-0 run in the next four minutes to increase its lead to 63-42.
Michaela Booker's lay-up with 2:48 to go gave the Gators their largest lead of the game, 68-44.
NDNU's Jasmine Waiters' two free throws made the final score 68-46 Gators.
Angela Van Sickel tied her season high as she led the Gators with 17 points including 16 in the second half. She also had four assists and four steals to go along with her 17 points.
Farrah Shokoor recorded her fourth straight night of scoring in double figures as she had 16 points off the bench for SF State. She also had four assists and three steals for the visitors.
Besides Van Sickel and Shokoor,
Jennifer Le had a season high 10 points to go along with her four rebounds and three steals.
Malaspina led the way for the Argonauts with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
SF State's defense forced 29 turnovers by Notre Dame de Namur and held them to just 34.8% shooting from the field including 28.6% in the second half. The Gators also recorded 18 steals.
SF State will return to the court in the New Year, when the Gators travel to Turlock, Calif., for a 5:30 pm PST scheduled conference game with Cal State Stanislaus. They will then travel to Chico, Calif., the next evening for a 5:30pm PST scheduled conference game with No. 20 Chico State. SF State will return to The Swamp, when the Gators host Cal State Dominguez Hills.
