Box Score 2 FRESNO, Calif.--- The 17
th ranked Fresno Pacific Sunbirds swept a doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators 9-5 and 8-1 this afternoon at FPU Baseball Field in Fresno, Calif. The Gators had leads in both games, but the Sunbirds rallied back from the deficits for the doubleheader sweep.
In game one, the Sunbirds scored 6 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to key their 9-5 come-from-behind victory over the visiting SF State Gators. Kevin Magill hit a two-run single to put the hosts up 7-5 while Karlan Andrews added a two-run home run in the inning.
Matt Quintero had three of the Gators'10 hits including a solo home run.
SF State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Miguel Flores had a lead-off double and scored
Mark Lindsay's RBI single. Lindsay later crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Steven Lozier's two-run two-out home run in the bottom of the third inning tied the game at 2-2.
Quintero hit a solo home on a 1-0 count in the Gators' half of the fourth to give the visitors back the lead, 3-2. SF State added another run in the fifth inning on a RBI double by
AJ Pianto that drove in
Ivan Otsuka to increase the Gators' lead to 4-2.
The Gators increased their lead to 5-2 on Quintero's two-out single in the 8
th that drove in Flores.
Fresno Pacific (8-2) retook the lead in its half of the eighth scoring six runs on six hits capped by Andrews'two-run homer to left field.
Ryan DeJesus started the game for the Gators pitching five innings, giving up 8 hits and three runs while striking out 9 in recording the no-decision.
Eric Watts (0-1) recorded the loss for SF State in relief.
Aaron Kirkpatrick (1-1) picked up the win in relief for Fresno Pacific. He went three innings, giving up two hits and a run.
Besides Quintero's three-hit game, Flores went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
In the nightcap, the Gators took a 1-0 lead on
Mark Lindsay's one-out run scoring single that drove in Otsuka in the top of the first inning.
The game remained 1-0 SF State until the bottom of the second inning when the Sunbirds scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Blaine Taylor's two-run home run in the fourth inning gave the Sunbirds a 5-1 lead.
SF State (1-3) had a chance to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning as the Gators had the bases loaded with two outs, but the Sunbird starter induced an inning ending ground out.
The Sunbirds broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning with solo home runs by Lozier and Vaughn as they took a 8-1 lead.
Branden Petrangelo (0-1) suffered the loss for the Gators. Matt Mazzoni improved to 2-0 as he picked up the win for the Sunbirds. Mazzoni pitched five innings, giving up seven hits and one run while striking out four and walking two.
Miguel Flores had two of the Gators' seven hits.
The Gators will return to the diamond next weekend as they open up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a four-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The series will begin with a single game on Friday, Feb. 17
th at 1pm in Carson, Calif. The two teams will then play a doubleheader starting at 11am on Saturday, Feb. 18
th. The series will conclude on Sunday with a single game also starting at 11am.
