Otters' Defense Stymies Gators in 76-57 Win

Candyce Matthews Paced the Gators with 13 Points off the Bench This Evening in Seaside
Box Score SEASIDE,  Calif.---  The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters held the visiting SF State Gators to just 42% shooting from the field and forced 21 turnovers to key their 76-57 home conference win this evening at the Kelp Bed in Seaside, Calif.  Brittani Jefferson paced the Otters (16-5, 13-4 CCAA) with 18 points off the bench going a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and connecting on two free throws.

“Tonight we were outplayed in every facet of the game against a better CSU Monterey Bay team,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace.  “We have four games remaining and I am hopeful, we can close the season on a positive note.”

SF State (7-17, 6-12 CCAA) stays in tenth place in the CCAA with two weeks left in the regular season.  The Gators are one game behind Cal State San Bernardino and Sonoma State who are tied for eighth place.  The top eight teams at the end of the regular season advance to the CCAA Basketball Tournament Championship.

Candyce Matthews paced the Gators with 13 points in 21 minutes off the bench.  SF State out-rebounded the Otters 35-24 with Farrah Shokoor leading the way with 8 rebounds. 

The first ten minutes went back and forth with the Gators' Matthews giving the visitors a 16-15 lead.  The hosts then went on a 14-4 run to take a 30-19 lead on a jumper by Shonetta Crain-Williams, who finished with 12 points.  The Otters increased their lead to 36-19 with 2:15 left in the half. 

Charnay Bell's jumper capped a 10-2 run to end the half for the Gators as they cut the Otter lead to 38-29.

The Otters started the second half strong as they outscored SF State 13-4 to take their largest lead of the game, 51-33 at the 14:44 mark. 

Michaela Booker's two made free throws cut the Otter lead to 61-50, the closest the visitors would get as the hosts cruised to a 76-57 victory.

The Gators will begin a season ending four-game home stand this Thursday, February 16 at 5:30pm when the Humboldt State Lumberjacks come to the Swamp on SF State's campus.
