SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's basketball team was limited to season-low totals in points and field-goal percentage on Thursday as Humboldt State pulled away for a 51-34 victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at The Swamp.
The Gators (7-18, 6-13 CCAA) connected on just 11 of 53 field-goal attempts (21 percent) to remain in 10
th place in the league standings, a game-and-a-half behind Cal State San Bernardino in the race for the eighth and final CCAA playoff spot.
Meanwhile, the Lumberjacks (17-6, 13-6 CCAA) fared only marginally better in the defensive struggle, draining 17 of their 55 shots (31 percent) as the two sides combined for 34 turnovers. However, HSU outscored the Purple and Gold 20-7 in points off those miscues and owned a 45-41 edge in rebounding.
“I am extremely disappointed in our lack of effort and energy in tonight's game,” said SF State head coach Joaquin Wallace. “We had a chance to gain some ground in the race for the CCAA Tournament, but we are not passionate about winning basketball games at this point.”
Lauren Varney was the lone Gator to reach double figures as the sophomore post player finished with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, while
Farrah Shokoor added a team-best eight caroms of her own.
On the flip side, HSU was paced by three-pronged attack of Lisa Petty, Kayla Williams and Bree Halsey, who combined for 36 of the Jacks' 51 points. Petty led all scorers with 14 points, while Williams and Halsey finished with 11 apiece, with the latter surpassing a double-double after grabbing a game-high 10 boards.
Consecutive baskets by Varney provided SF State its only lead of the night at 8-7 with 11:54 remaining in the first half, before Petty answered with a jumper to put HSU in front for good 9-8 at the 10:35 mark.
The Gators remained close over the next six minutes as a 3-pointer by
Angela Van Sickel brought the hosts back to within one at 18-17 with 4:42 left on the clock.
However, The SF State offense fell into a prolonged funk at this juncture, scoring just one free throw before halftime as the Jacks opened up a 25-18 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Gators, who missed their final five shots from the floor in the first half, also found baskets scarce to begin the second period, misfiring on their first six attempts following the break. A jumper by Kayla Davis ended the field-goal drought with 11:04 remaining; however, SF State found itself on the wrong side of a 34-22 score.
The Gators twice cut the deficit to 10, including a 38-28 spread following a Varney layup with 7:57 to go, before HSU responded with nine consecutive points, including seven straight by Halsey to put the game out of reach at 47-28 with 3:56 left on the clock.
SF State continues its homestand on Saturday when Sonoma State pays a visit to the Swamp for a CCAA clash, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Seawolves, who are currently ninth in the CCAA, a half-game ahead of the Gators, dropped a 70-58 decision on the road to Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday.
