Gators Fall 11-4 in Series Opener at CSUDH

Devon King Had a Two-out RBI Double For the Gators In Their Series Opener at CSUDH
Box Score  CARSON,  Calif.---  Cal State Dominguez Hills rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 11-4 in the opening game of this weekend's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) four-game series at Toro Field in Carson, Calif.  The Toros (3-1, 1-0 CCAA) scored all of their 11 runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

SF State (1-4, 0-1 CCAA) put a three spot on the board in the top of the first inning.  Dustin Wold led off the inning reaching base by being hit by a pitch.  He advanced to second when Ivan Otsuka reached on an error.  Wold then scored on AJ Pianto's single through the right side.  Both Otsuka advanced a base on a balk by the Toro starter.  Otsuka scored the Gators' second run on a sacrifice fly to right field by Mark Lindsay.  Then with two outs, Devon King hit a double to drive in Pianto to give the Gators a 3-0 lead.

Gator starter, Eric Watts (0-2), held the Toros scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Cal State Dominguez Hills loaded the bases with no outs for Chris Vopcinek, who hit a two-run double down the left field line.  Ricky Vasquez also hit a two-run double down the left field line to give the hosts a 4-3 lead.  The Toros added four more runs with two coming on a two-out two-run pinch hit single by Nick Plantz.

SF State cut the deficit to 8-4 as Otsuka scored on a two-out single by Miguel Flores in the top of the seventh. 
The Toros added another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to make the final 11-4 Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Sean Wardour (1-1) picked up the win in the start for the Toros, going six innings of five hit ball, giving up three runs (one earned) while striking out six and walking two. 

Watts recorded the loss for the Gators, pitching five innings, giving up six hits and five runs while striking out three and walking one.

Carlos Avila had three of the Toros' 13 hits including driving in two runs and scoring once.  Six different Gators had a hit apiece.

The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow morning at 11am at Toro Field in Carson, Calif., with a doubleheader.  The series will conclude on Sunday morning also at 11am at Toro Field with a single game.
