SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Kelsey Murakami went 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored to lead the San Francisco State softball team to a 5-2 triumph over Cal State San Bernardino in game one of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Friday at Coyote Park.  The Gators (4-7, 2-4 CCAA) were unable to complete the sweep, however, as the host Coyotes rallied for a 7-6 decision in the nightcap.

Jordan Brenner, Lucy Fernandez and Cara Spence added two hits apiece in SF State's opening victory, while starter Marisa Ibarra (2-1) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks to collect the win in the circle.

Brenner drove in the Gators first two runs of the contest, smacking her first collegiate triple to plate Heather Jensen in the top of first, before singling home Murakami with two outs in the second.

SF State then padded its lead in the third when Murakami blasted a home run over the fence in right field for her first career round-tripper, providing the visitors a 3-0 advantage.

CSUSB (5-6, 1-1 CCAA) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Alyssa Flores' solo shot; however, the Gators responded with a pair of markers in the fifth to give themselves some additional breathing room at 5-1. Ashley Huff drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a Fernandez double, before racing home on Spence's RBI single. SF State loaded the bases shortly thereafter as pinch-hitter Jenna Robertson knocked in Spence with a base hit to left.

The Coyotes tacked on a run in the sixth when Brittney Ybarra singled in Alex Mitchell, who previously stroked a one-out double. The host school threatened to add more after Ybarra took second on a wild pitch and Flores walked; however, Ibarra prevented further damage with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.  The Gator hurler also avoided trouble in the seventh by inducing a game-ending grounder after Courtney Wilhelms doubled and Mitchell walked with two outs.

Wilhelms (3-3) went the distance in the circle for CSUSB and went 3-for-3 at the plate, but absorbed the loss after giving up all five runs on 11 hits and two walks.

Jensen's three-run homer in the top of the fourth gave SF State a slim 5-4 edge in game two, before the Coyotes rallied with a pair of markers in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-5 lead they would not relinquish.  Mitchell hit a one-out single and raced home shortly thereafter when Ybarra reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a Gator error.  Britney Butler then plated Ybarra with a sacrifice fly to right.

CSUSB then extended the margin to 7-5 in the fifth as Wilhelms cracked a solo shot off SF State reliever Ali Garcia.

The Gators narrowed the gap in the top of the seventh, when Huff's pinch-hit single brought home Brittany Barcellos with two outs.  The visitors could not keep the momentum, however, as Coyote reliever Abreanna Landeros induced a foul-out to nail down her first save of the year.

Despite a shaky outing, CSUSB starter Carly Land (1-3) pocketed the victory after surrendering six runs on nine hits and four walks, while Garcia (1-2) took the loss after ceding three runs (one earned) on three hits over the final three frames in relief of Jordan Stanaland, who yielded four runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk in three innings of work.

Murakami added two hits in the nightcap for the Purple and Gold, while Barcellos (two runs) and Courtney Gravel finished with a pair of singles as well.

The Gators led 2-1 in the second after Sarah Catania smacked her first collegiate double and later scored on a wild pitch. However, the Coyotes put up three markers off Stanaland in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of three SF State errors to vault in front 4-2.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series with another twin-bill on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
