Box Score CARSON, Calif.--- SF State's baseball team won the first game of this afternoon's doubleheader in dramatic fashion 2-1 over Cal State Dominguez Hills in 11 innings.
Ivan Otsuka scored with what proved to be the game-winning run when
Danny Souza reached on base on a two-out error by the Toros.
Ryan DeJesus started the game for the Gators and pitched 8 innings of four-hit ball. He gave up just one run while striking out six and walking just one batter.
Peter Reyes (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he pitched two innings of scoreless relief. The freshman struck out two and walked one while giving up no hits.
Branden Petrangelo recorded his second save of the season as he pitched a scoreless 11
th.
The Toros (3-2, 1-1 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead as Matthew Young scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Allen in the bottom of the fourth inning. Young led off the inning being hit by a pitch. He stole second and went to third when Drew Rodela reached base on a fielder's choice bunt. Then Young scored on Allen's sacrifice fly with one out.
SF State tied the game at 1-1 in its half of the fifth inning. With one out,
Devon King singled to center field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Souza. He then scored on a two-out double by AJ Almarez.
The Toros had a chance to take the win the game in their half of the ninth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. That is when Reyes came in relief of DeJesus. He got the first out on a fly out to the Gators right fielder,
Devon King. The second out came on a strike out. With two outs, Reyes induced the final out on a ground out to Souza at shortstop.
SF State had a chance to take the lead in the top of the 10
th as the Gators loaded the bases, but Chris Vopinek induced the visitors to two ground outs and a strike out. Reyes then shut down the Toros in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Otsuka led off the Gator 11
th with a walk. He advanced to second on a balk and went to third on a ground out. With two outs, Otsuka scored the Gators' second run of the game when Souza reached base on a throwing error by the Toros.
Petrangelo came in to pitch the bottom of the 11
th, Matt Yakima led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a single by Young. They both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Brian Oda reached first on an infield single to load the bases. Petrangelo induced the next Toro batter to ground out to
Miguel Flores at third. Then with two outs and the bases still loaded, Petrangelo induced a game ending double play as Allen lined out to Flores at third and stepped on the base to record the double play.
Six different Gator batters had a hit off the Toros pitchers.
Young had three of the Toros' six hits with Vopinek (0-1) recording the loss in relief.
Game two was suspended because of darkness after six innings with the Gators up 14-7. The conclusion of game two will start at 11am tomorrow morning in Carson, Calif., at Toro Field. The fourth and final game of this weekend's series will start approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.
