Gators Take Series From Toros

AJ Almarez Went a Combined 5-for-6 While Driving in 6 Runs In the Gators' Two Wins This Afternoon
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  CARSON, Calif.---  The SF State Gators won their first four-game conference series this weekend taking three out of four road games from Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.  The Gators (4-4, 3-1 CCAA) won the final three games including both this afternoon 14-7 and 14-9.  This was the first time since 2010 that the Gators have won a conference series (against Chico State) and first time since 2005 that SF State won a series from the Toros.

In the completion of the suspended game from Saturday, the Gators held on for a 14-7 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.  SF State came back from a 4-0 deficit to take the victory. 

The Toros took a 4-0 lead after two innings with Matthew Young's two-out home run to left field capping the scoring for the Toros. 

SF State cut into the Toro lead with a three-run third inning.  Danny Souza opened the inning with a lead-off single and went to third on a double by AJ Almarez.  Souza scored on a ground out by Dustin Wold.  Then with two outs, AJ Pianto drove in Almarez and Miguel Flores drove in Pianto with a double down the left field line. 

Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 5-3 lead with a two-out single by Matt Akimaya that drove in Chris Vopinek, who reached on a two-out double to left center.

The Gators once again cut into the Toro lead in the top of the fourth on a two-out double by Almarez that drove in Devon King, who reached on a fielding error. 

SF State took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.  Flores singled with one out and advanced to third on a single by Mark Lindsay.  Flores then scored on a double by Matt Quintero and Lindsay came in on a two-out single by Souza. 

The Gators took the lead when Quintero scored as Wold reached base with two outs on a throwing error by Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Toros tied the game in their half of the fifth inning on a two-run single by Akimaya. 

The Gators broke the game open with a 7-run sixth inning with Almarez's two-run single being the big hit of the inning. 

Trae Lopez (1-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching two innings giving up two hits and two runs.  Jack Jorgensen pitched the final two innings, giving up no hits and walking one while facing a minimum of six batters.

Souza finished the suspended game 3-for-5 with two RBIs and scoring twice.  Almarez also had three hits and drove in three runs while scoring twice.  Four other Gator batters had two hits apiece in Pianto, Lindsay, Flores and Quintero.

Once again in the scheduled game, the Gators rallied from another deficit and scored 14 runs including 12 in the fifth inning as they defeated the Toros 14-9 to take the series finale.  Branden Petrangelo (1-1) picked up the win as he pitched five innings, giving up 7 hits and 7 runs (four earned) while striking out four and walking three.  Jeff Clegg came in relief and pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out three and walking three.   Peter Reyes pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief to preserve the win for the Gators.

SF State was down 2-0 after the first inning, but came back and tied the game with a two-run third inning capped by a Lindsay two-out RBI single to right center. 

The game remained tied until the Gator' fifth inning when they scored 12 runs on 9 hits.  Sam Wilkins' bases-clearing double and Almarez's two-run single being the big hits of the inning.

The Toros (3-4, 1-3 CCAA) scored three runs in the sixth and two more in the ninth, but could not get any closer as SF State won 14-9. 

Six different Gators had multiple hits led by Pianto, Lindsay and Quintero each with three hits apiece.

After the conclusion of the second game this afternoon, the two teams held a ceremony for SF State Gator Mo Mariscal, who was injured in a car accident earlier this school year.  The Toro Baseball Family, under the direction of head coach Murphy Su'a, made a generous donation to the Mo Fund.

SF State will continue its season long 11-game road trip this coming weekend for a four-game series with 10th ranked Chico State in Chico, Calif., beginning with a single game this Friday, February 24 at 2pm.  Chico State splits its four-game series this weekend at UC San Diego.
