Gators Split Doubleheader with No. 15 Chico State

Devon King Had Four Hits Including a 2-Run HR in the Gators' 6-4 Win
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  CHICO, Calif.---  The SF State Gators split this afternoon's doubleheader with the 15th ranked Chico State Wildcats winning night cap 6-4 as Devon King went 4-for-4 with three RBIs including a two-run home run in the fourth inning.  SF State lost the first game 18-3.

In the night cap, the Gators took a 1-0 lead when Miguel Flores scored on a fielder's choice by AJ Almarez.  Flores led off the second with a single and advanced to second when Mark Lindsay walked and went to third on a single by King.
SF State (5-6, 4-3 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead on Devon King's two-run home run to left field that scored Flores. 

Chico State cut into the Gator lead with a two-run fourth and tied the game on a Myles Dempsey single in the fifth that drove in Cody Foster. 

The Gators came back and retook the lead in their half of the sixth. King had a lead-off triple and scored on a double by Tyler Tulowitzki.  Tulowitzki then gave the Gators a 5-3 lead on a single up the middle by Almarez. 

The visitors added an insurance run when King drove in Flores on a bunt single in the seventh.

Chico State made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh.  Blake Gibbs walked to lead off the inning and went to second on an error by the Gators.  He then scored on a single by Shane Kroker  to make it 6-4 SF State. 

With the tying run on base, Branden Petrangelo struck out the last Wildcat batter to preserve the 6-4 victory.
Peter Reyes (2-1) pitched 0.1 scoreless innings of relief in recording the win.  Petrangelo recorded his third save of the season by pitching 0.1 scoreless innings .

Matthew Cummins had a no-decision while Trae Lopez pitched 1.2 innings of relief, giving up no hits and one run while walking two. 

Besides Kings' four hits, Flores had two hits and scored three times and Almarez drove in two runs.

Sean Martin (2-2) recorded the loss in relief for the Wildcats as Kroker had two of the hosts' seven hits.

Chico State  scored in every inning in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader starting with three in the bottom of the first inning.  They added two more in the second on Cody Foster's two-out two-run double to take a 5-0 lead.

SF State cut into the Wildcat lead when Dustin Wold scored on a one-out single up the middle in the top of the fourth inning. Wold led off the inning with a walk and then stole second and came in on Pianto's single.

The Wildcats added one run in the fourth and fifth and broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning.  Blake Gibbs one-out two-run double in the sixth inning was the big hit of the inning.

Chico State(10-3, 4-3 CCAA) added three more runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to take a 18-1 lead.

The Gators scored twice in the top of the ninth to make the final 18-3 Chico State.

Ryan DeJesus (0-1) recorded the loss in the start for the Gators while Ryan O'Shea improved to 3-0 for Chico State.  O'Shea pitched six innings, giving up five hits, and walking one while striking out six.

Ian McKay was 5-for-6 and Cody Foster was 3-for-5 to lead the way for the Wildcat offense, which had 18 hits.

Four Gators had two hits apiece in Dante Smith, AJ Pianto, Mark Lindsay and Danny Soua.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow morning at 11am for a single game at Chico State's Nettleton Stadium.  The Gators will return home this Friday, March 2 at 2pm, when they begin a four-game conference series with the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles at SF State's Maloney Field.
