Angela Van Sickel combining for 40 of the Gators' 51 points, the Chico State Wildcats defeated the visiting SF State Gators 61-50 in a CCAA game at Acker Gymnasium on the campus of Chico State this evening. Synchro Bull paced the Wildcats (12-8, 9-7 CCAA) with 14 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and two blocked shots.
“Chico State's bench outplayed ours this evening,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace. “As a team, we have to do a better job of finishing out layup, put-backs and free throws.” “
Booker paced the Gators with 16 points while Hicks chipped in 14 and Van Sickel had 10 points for SF State. With the loss, SF State falls to 7-15 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA which puts them in a three-way tie with Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino for seventh place.
Chico State, who is in sixth place in the CCAA, had its bench outscore the Gators 34-22 lead by the duo of Crystal Sewell and Jennifer Rene each with 8 points. Besides Bull's 14 points, Natash Smith added 11 points for the Wildcats.
Charnay Bell's jumper seven minutes into the game gave the Gators an 8-3 lead, but Chico State outscored SF State 14-3 to take a 17-11 with 7:12 left in the half.
SF State tied the game at 17-17 on Booker's jumper, but the Wildcats finished the half outscoring their visitors 10-8 to take a 27-25 lead into the locker room.
Chico State came out firing in the second half as the Wildcats increased their lead to 34-27 three minutes in the second half. Jennifer Rene's lay-up with 13:42 on the clock gave the Wildcats their largest lead at that time, 44-33.
The Gators would not go away as Hicks' jumper with 6:21 to go capped a 14-4 run by the visitors as they cut the deficit to 48-47.
That would be the closest the Gators would get as the Wildcats finished the game outscoring their guests 15-4 in the final six minutes to take the 63-51 victory.
Chico State forced 22 turnovers by the Gators while holding them to just 37% shooting frog from the field. SF State was 0-for-7 from three-point land and just 7-for-13 from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats also had 13 steals and was 12-for-14 from the line with five players going two-for-two.
SF State will continue its four-game road trip this Friday, February 10 at 5:30pm, when the Gators travel across the Bay to face Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif. The Pioneers defeated the Gators 64-39 in San Francisco on January 7.
