ATHERTON, Calif. – The San Francisco State wrestling team closed out the dual-meet portion of its 2011-12 schedule on Wednesday with an uplifting 23-9 victory over host Menlo College in a non-conference showdown at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
The Gators captured seven of 10 bouts on the evening to finish the year at 5-9, while the Oaks, ranked 20
th in the latest NAIA poll, saw their record slip to 8-8 overall.
SF State grabbed a quick 6-0 lead as
Arman Ostadsharif notched his eighth victory of the year with a tight 2-0 decision over Carlos Soto in the 174-pound weight class, while
Zach Jimenez (11-10) won for the sixth time in his last seven outings after dispatching Greg Alvarez by a 5-2 count at 184.
Menlo trimmed the deficit in half, courtesy of Ben Yura's 12-6 triumph over
Thomas Martin at 197, before
Anthony Gonzalez posted the first of three straight Gator victories, which ultimately provided the visitors a commanding 15-3 advantage. Gonzalez came away with a 5-2 decision over Lenny Romero in the heavyweight division, recording a first-period takedown and an escape to help raise his record to 16-11 on the season.
Andy Yu soon followed with a close 6-4 decision over Drake Medeiros at 125, earning a reversal in the final 20 seconds for his 11
th win of the year, while
Julian Perez emerged with 6-3 victory over Angel Garcia at 133, clinching the bout with a third-period takedown to improve to 18-13 on the season.
The Gator momentum was briefly stalled when the Oaks' Christian Franks doubled up on
Daniel Flores by a 6-3 tally at 141; however,
Dylan Phillipy (18-13) responded with 17-0 win by technical fall over Richie Nole at 149, to put SF State firmly in control at 20-6.
After Menlo's David Rios posted a 5-2 decision over
Conrad Snell at 157, the Gators tacked on the final points of the night when
Isaiah Jimenez collected a 7-2 decision over Adrian Gonzales at 165 to improve to 20-8 on the season.
SF State will now have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Division II Super Regional 4/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, scheduled for Feb. 25-26 in Hays, Kan.
