Box Score SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators rallied twice back from deficits to defeat the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves (12-8), 6-5, this afternoon in a non-conference game at SF State's Maloney Field.
Mark Lindsay drove in the game-tying run with a two-out double in the bottom of the 9
th and scored the game-winning run on a failed picked off attempt by the visitors.
Sonoma State took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Scott Templeton had a lead-off walk and went second on a single by Joel Thys to center field. Jeff Boulware also had a single to center field to load the bases with no one out. Justin Serrao then was hit by a pitch which Templeton scored to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Boulware scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Jackson Stogner and Thys scored on a ground out by Evan Warner.
The game remained 3-0 Sonoma State until the Gator half of the sixth inning. With two outs, Lindsay had a single to right field and went to second on a balk by the Seawolf pitcher. King then was hit by a pitch.
Adam Perez then advanced to first on a strike out wild pitch to load the bases.
Nick McFarland came in to pinch run for Perez and then
Sam Wilkins had an infield single which Lindsay and King scored on to cut the Seawolf lead to 4-2.
Still with two outs and the count 1-2, pinch hitter
Andrew Suvunnachuen hit a two-run double to left field to give the Gators a 4-3 lead as McFarland and Wilkins crossed home plate.
The Gator lead did not last long as the Seawolves tied in the game at 4-4 with back to back doubles one out doubles by Garrett Gooselaw and Devon Zenn in the top of the seventh.
Sonoma State took the lead in the ninth inning on an one-out double by Gooselaw which scored Warner, who reached on a lead-off double. The Gators then intentionally walked Zenn. Freshman
Peter Reyes came in relief and induced the next two Seawolf batter to strike out and to ground out to second to keep the score at 5-4 Sonoma State.
AJ Almarez led off the bottom of the ninth with an infield single. He went to second on a sacrifice by
AJ Pianto. With two outs, Lindsay drilled a 1-2 pitch for a double to left center to drive in Almarez with the tying run. King then was hit by a pitch. Sonoma State then tried to pick off Lindsay at second but the throw went high and the freshman catcher came in to score the game-winning run.
SF State, who is now 6-2 in one-run games, has won five of its last six games to improve to 10-8 on the season.
The Gators will return to the diamond this Tuesday, March 13 for a 2:30pm non-conference game in Atherton, Calif., with the Menlo College Oaks. The Gators will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) on March 16 as they begin a four-game series with the visiting UC San Diego Tritons at Maloney Field. The two teams will play a single nine-inning game on Friday, March 16 with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 2pm.
