SAN FRANCSICO--- The visiting UC San Diego Tritons swept a doubleheader this afternoon from the SF State Gators 4-3 and 20-2 to improve to 13-13 overall and 11-7 in the CCAA. Garrett Tuck went a combined 7-for-9 with two runs scored while driving in four runs in the doubleheader for the Tritons.
UC San Diego took a 1-0 lead in game one of the opener on a two-out RBI single by Spencer Frazier in the top of the second inning.
SF State (10-10, 7-7 CCAA) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning capped by a two-run two-out double by
Miguel Flores.
The game remained 3-1 hosts until the top of the sixth when the Tritons tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run inning.
The visitors took the lead in the top of the eighth when Gregg Ringold hit two-out single up the middle that scored Frazier with the game-winning run.
The Gators had a chance to tie the game in their half of the eighth inning, but Tony York stranded three runners on base with two outs.
York shut down the Gators in their half of the ninth to record his fourth save of the season and preserve the win for the Tritons. Ryan Goodbrand (4-0) picked up the win for UC San Diego as he pitched 7 innings, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out three and walking three. Frazier had three of the Tritons' 12 hits while Garrett Tuck also had three hits for the visitors.
Peter Reyes (4-2) recorded the loss in relief for the Gators, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up six hits and one run.
Eric Watts had the no-decision in the start for the Gators, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking one. Junior third baseman
Miguel Flores was a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs for the Gators' offense.
In the night cap, the Tritons scored in every inning as they defeated the Gators 20-2. They had 26 hits including 8 doubles two off the bat of Danny Susdorf, who finished the game 4-for-7 with 4 RBIs and two runs scored. Sam Michaels was 5-for-6 with three RBIs while scoring four times and Tuck had four hits for the visitors.
Jeff Rauh (1-3) picked up the win for UC San Diego while
Ryan DeJesus fell to 0-2 for the Gators.
Dustin Wold and
Sam Wilkins each had two hits apiece for SF State.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting doubleheader at Maloney Field on the campus of SF State.
