Box Score SAN FRANCSICO--- The visiting SF State Gators battled back from a 6-0 deficit after three innings and had the go-ahead run on first with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the University of San Francisco's Cameron Love induced the final Gator to ground out and preserve the 8-6 non-conference win over the Gators. Matt Quintero led the Gators come back going 3-for-5 while driving in four runs.
University of San Francisco (11-12) took a 4-0 lead in its half of the second inning as Matt Chavez started the scoring for the Dons with a two-run home run to right center. The Dons added two more runs in the third inning to give the hosts a 6-0 lead.
SF State scored its first run on a
Matt Quintero one-out double to left field which drove in
Mark Lindsay, who reached on a one-out single. The Gators cut the Dons lead in half with a two-run sixth inning with Quintero hitting a one-out two-run single to left field that drove in AJ Almarez and
Miguel Flores to make it 6-3 USF.
The Dons added two important insurance runs in their half of the sixth inning on a two-run triple by Bradley Zimmer which Bob Cruikshank and Artiz Garcia scored to give the hosts a 8-3 lead going into the last three innings.
The Gators did not go away as
Andrew Suvunnachuen hit a two-run two-out home run in the top of the seventh to decrease the hosts lead to 8-5.
SF State (11-12) cut the Dons' lead to 8-6 when
AJ Pianto hit a two-out pinch hit single to right field which drove in
Ivan Otsuka. Lindsay reached base on a lead-off walked and Otsuka pinch ran for him. With one out, Otsuka advanced to second on a single by
Devon King. He went to third with two outs on a wild pitch and scored on Pianto's single.
The in the top of the ninth inning, Suvunnachuen hit a one-out single to right field and
Mark Johnson came in to pinch run for him. Johnson went to second when
Thomas Wood hit a pinch hit two-out single to center field. Quintero then stepped up and hit a two-out single to left field to cut the Dons' lead to 8-7 as Johnson crossed home. The Dons' reliever (Cameron Love) then induced the next Gator batter to hit a 2-1 pitch right back to him for the final out of the game.
Logan West (1-0) picked up the win for the University of San Francisco as he pitched three innings, giving up two hits and one run while striking out four. Love recorded his second save of the season by pitching 0.1 innings and giving up one hit. The Dons had 10 hits led by Nik Balog and Brendan Henriks each with two hits.
Jack Jorgensen (2-2) recorded the loss for the Gators in the start as he pitched three innings, giving up 7 hits and six runs (five earned) while striking out five.
Peter Reyes came in relief and pitched five innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out a season high six batters.
SF State managed 12 hits off of seven different Dons pitcher with Quintero's three hits leading the way. Lindsay and Suvunnachuen had two hits apiece also for the Gators, who will return home this Tuesday, March 27 for a 2:30pm non-conference game with Menlo College at Maloney Field.
