Box Score RENO, Nev.--- The visiting SF State Gators defeated the NCAA Division I University of Nevada Wolf Pack 5-4 this afternoon in a non-conference game at Peccole Park in Reno. With the win, the Gators improved to 9-8 while the Wolf Pack falls to 7-5. SF State has won five of its last seven games including four of the Gators' last five games.
The Gators opened up the game with a three-run first inning. AJ Almarez reached on a fielding error with one out and then stole second. He scored on a single to right center by
Matt Quintero. The Gators' next batter,
Miguel Flores, then hit a double down the right field line to put runners on second and third with one out.
Andrew Suvunnachuen then drove in Quintero with the inning's second run on a ground out. Flores then made it 3-0 SF State as he crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Nevada came back with a run in its half of the first inning. Jay Anderson had a lead-off walk and went to third after stealing second on an errant throw by the Gators. He scored as Brett Jones reached on a fielding error to make it 3-1 SF State.
SF State added another run in the top of the third inning. Almarez had a lead-off walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Quintero. With two outs, Suvunnachuen drove him with a single through the right side on a 1-2 count to increase the visitors' lead to 4-1.
The Gators added another insurance run in their half of the fifth inning.
Dustin Wold lead off the inning with a triple to left center and scored with one out on Flores' ground out to give SF State a 5-1 lead.
Nevada cut the Gator lead in half in its half of the fifth on Jamison Rowe's one-out single through the left side. The Wolf Pack cut SF State's lead to 5-4 as they scored another run in the sixth inning on Ryan Teel's sacrifice fly to left field that drove in Austin Byler, who led off the inning with a walk.
That is the closest that the Wolf Pack would get as the Gator reliever trio of
Trae Lopez,
Jack Jorgensen and
Peter Reyes combined to pitch five innings of relief, giving up 5 hits and one run while striking out four and walking one.
Jeff Clegg (1-0) picked up this first win of the season as he started the game. The senior pitcher pitched five innings of five-hit ball, giving up three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking one. Reyes recorded his first collegiate save as he pitched a scoreless ninth including striking out the first batter he saw in the bottom of the ninth.
Daniel Levine (0-2) was one of nine pitchers that the Wolf Pack sent the mound.
Sam Wilkins finished the day 2-for-4 for the Gators while six other SF State batters had one hit apiece. Suvunnachuen drove in two runs and Almarez scored twice. This win got the Gators a little revenge for last season' 4-3 walk-off loss to Nevada.
The Gators will return home this Sunday, March 10 at 12pm, when they host Bay Area rival Sonoma State in a non-conference game at Maloney Field.
