Sonoma State Sweeps Gators

Tyler Tulowitzki Had Four and Drove in Three Runs in the Gators DH With Sonoma State
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO –The visiting Sonoma State Seawolves swept a CCAA doubleheader from the SF State Gators this afternoon at Maloney Field winning 10-9 and 8-4 to take the weekend series 3 to 1.  With the sweep the Seawolves improve to 18-10 overall and 16-4 in the CCAA while SF State falls to 12-15 overall and 9-11 in the CCAA.
 
In the opener, both teams combined for 19 runs, 31 hits and 7 errors in the three hour twenty-one minute marathon.  The Seawolves took a 3-0 lead in their half of the second inning as they scored their runs on two hits and two errors by the Gators. 
 
SF State took the lead with a four-run third inning.  Thomas Wood led off the inning with an infield single and scored when AJ Almaraz hit a one-out single to left field which the Seawolf outfielder bobbled to bring in Wood with the Gators' first run.  Mark Lindsay then moved Almaraz to third on a two-out infield single.  Almaraz scored on a single to right field by Matt Quintero.  King then drove in Lindsay with a single up the middle.  Still with two outs, Tyler Tylowitzki struck out swinging but reach first on a wild pitch which then Quintero came around to score the go-ahead run when the Seawolves had an errant throw.
 
The Gators added two more runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.  Wood had another infield single and stole second with one out.  He went to third on a infield single by Almaraz and scored on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Flores.
 
Sonoma State tied the game with a three-run fifth with back to back RBI doubles with two outs by Jeff Boulware and Justin Serraeo capping the inning for the visitors.  They took the lead for good with a two-run seventh inning.
 
They added an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a Joel Thys sacrifice fly that drove in Garrett Gooselaw to give the Seawolves a 9-6 lead. 
 
SF State would not go away as the Gators' Quintero hit a two-out two-run double to right field to drive in Almaraz and Flores to cut the Seawolf lead to 9-8.  Sonoma State came back with another insurance run in the ninth inning to take a 10-8 lead.
 
The Gators still battled in the bottom of the ninth.  Tulowitzki had a lead-off single and Dante Smith came in to pinch run for him.  He went to third on a pinch-hit single to right center by Andrew Suvunnachuen and scored on a fielder's choice by Wood.  Wood then stole his second base of the game.  Dustin Wold then walked followed by another walk with two outs to Flores to load the bases.  Michael Garber then induced the next Gator batter to strike out looking to preserve the 10-9 Sonoma State victory and record his fourth save of the season.
 
The hosts had 18 hits in the opener led by Almaraz who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.  Wold and Quintero each had three hits and Tulowitzki and Wood had two hits apiece to lead the Gator offense. 
 
Jeff Johnson paced the Seawolf attack with three hits.  Joshua Nervis (2-2) picked up the win while Branden Petrangelo (2-3) recorded the loss for the Gators.
 
In the night cap, the Seawolves took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning and never looked back.  Jackson Stogner's two-run triple to right center with two outs was the big hit of the inning.  The Seawolves added two more runs in the third inning on a two-out single by Scott Templeton to increase their lead to 6-0.
 
SF State put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the visitor lead to 6-2. 
 
Sonoma State added another run in the sixth inning on a two-out single by Garrett Schwartz to give the Seawolves a 7-2 lead.
 
The Gators scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Tulowitzki one-out single up the middle that drove in Quintero, who reached on a lead-off double to cut the deficit to 7-3.
 
The Seawolves added another run in the seventh on a Gooselaw RBI double to increase their lead to 8-3.
 
SF State did not go away again as the Gators scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.  Adam Perez walked with one out and then went to second on a two-out single by Lindsay.  Quintero then was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Tulowitzki who drew a bases loaded walk that scored Perez.  The Seawolf pitcher, Glen Wallace, then induced the next Gator to ground out to end the game and preserve the visitors' 8-4 win.
 
Tulowitzki finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Gator hitters while Trae Lopez (1-1) recorded the loss.

Harmen Sidhu (4-0) picked up the win for Sonoma State. 
 
SF State will return to the diamond this weekend in Pomona, Calif., as the Gators take on Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game series beginning this Thursday, April 5 with a single game at 3pm.
