SEASIDE, Calif. – The eighth-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay softball team blasted a combined six home runs on Friday to fuel a doubleheader sweep of visiting San Francisco State by scores of 6-3 and 10-5 at Otter Sports Complex.
With the results, the Gators fall to 14-28 on the season and 7-21 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while CSUMB, which finished with 10 extra-base hits on the day, climbs to 35-9 overall and 20-6 in conference action.
In the opener, SF State grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, courtesy of a bases-loaded walk to
Jenna Wermes and RBI singles by
Courtney Gravel and
Cara Spence. With one out, the Gators threatened to add to their total; however, Otter starter Cori Reinhardt induced foul out and a grounder to prevent further damage.
Reinhardt (15-3) settled in and allowed just one hit the rest of the way – a Wermes single in the sixth – to pick up the complete-game victory.
In the interim, CSUMB narrowed the gap on a two-run homer by Jackie Serna in the bottom of the fourth, before knotting the score on Jamie Moon's RBI double in the fifth.
The contest remained deadlocked at 3-3 until the seventh when Alyssa Rivera walked with two outs and Moon was subsequently hit by a pitch. Nina Villanueva then stepped to the plate and cracked an 0-2 offering from SF State starter
Marisa Ibarra over the fence in left-center field to give the Otters the walk-off victory.
Ibarra (7-9) was tagged with the defeat, surrendering eight hits, including two apiece to Rivera and Serna, while striking out four in 6 2/3 innings of work.
In the nightcap, CSUMB jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the third when Angelina Orozco drilled an inside-the-park homer to right center, plating Stacey Campos and Skyler Valdiva.
The Gators responded with four markers in the fourth, taking advantage of an Otter error, as
Sarah Catania drove in a pair with a base hit to right, sandwiched around RBI singles by Spence and
Ashley Huff, which provided the visitors a slim 4-3 edge.
The lead proved to be short-lived, however, as CSUMB answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to build a 7-4 cushion it would not surrender. Serna's fourth triple of the season plated two runners to cap the outburst after an Orozco RBI double and Villanueva's run-scoring single.
The host school then flashed its power once again in the sixth when Villanueva delivered a two-run blast over the center field fence, while Serna quickly followed with a solo shot to right, putting the Otters up 10-4.
SF State accounted for the final tally in the seventh when Murakami touched home on
Lucy Fernandez's sacrifice fly.
Caitlin Wallace (7-3) picked up the win after pitching the final 3 2/3 innings, yielding one run on six hits and two walks in relief of starter Danica Arterburn, who ceded four runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
On the flip side, Gator starter
Becky Nakano (5-6) allowed seven runs on 11 hits and two walks in four innings to absorb the loss, before giving way to
Ali Garcia to start the fifth.
The trio of Orozco, Serna and Villanueva combined to drive in all 10 of the Otters' runs on 10 of the team's 15 hits, while Spence, Murakami and Gravel finished with two hits each to pace the SF State offense.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game series with another twin-bill on Saturday, beginning at noon.
