Otters Sweep Gators in CCAA DH in Seaside

Matt Quintero Had Two Hits Including His Third HR of the Season in the Gators DH at CSUMB This Afternoon
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay swept this afternoon's doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside, Calif., 6-5 and 11-1 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest.  The Otters rallied back from a 5-2 deficit to take game one and the duo of Jeff Owen and Jacob Crose combined on a four-hitter in the night cap.

The Otters took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning in game one.  Jesse Olson hit a one-out triple and scored on a Ty Morris sacrifice fly to right field.  The Gators tied the game at 1-1 when Matt Quintero hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right field in the top of the fourth inning. 

Cal State Monterey Bay took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a David Garcia RBI which scored Tommy George, who reached base on a lead-off triple.

SF State (13-21, 10-16 CCAA) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.  Mark Lindsay and Quintero led off the inning with back-to-back walks.  They advanced a base when AJ Almaraz reached first on an error by the Otters.  Danny Souza then walked which Lindsay came in to score on and tied the game at 2-2.  Dante Smith also walked which Quintero scored to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.  Still with no outs and the bases loaded, Dustin Wold hit a single to left field which scored Almaraz.  Andrew Suvunnachuen hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Souza with the inning's fourth run of the game and increase the Gators' lead to 5-2.

The Otters cut the Gators' lead to 5-4 when they scored two runs in their half of the seventh capped by a George single to right field which drove in Olson. 

Then in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jason Merjano hit a lead-off triple down the left field line and scored the tying run on an Olson single up the middle.  Olson went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Morris and went to third on a ground out.  With two outs, David Garcia hit a walk-off single through the left side which drove in Olson with the game-winning run. 

Jordan Helmkamp (3-1) picked up the win in relief for the Otters, pitching three scoreless innings and giving up three hits while striking out two and walking one.  Olson finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs while scoring three times for the hosts.

Branden Petrangelo (3-4) recorded the loss in relief for SF State while Ryan DeJesus had a no-decision while striking out 8 batters.  Quintero finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI while Ivan Otsuka also had two hits for the Gators.

In the night cap, the Otters got all the scoring they needed in their half of the first inning off the bat of Jason Merjano.  The Otter shortstop hit a grand slam home run to right center with one out to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.  They added another run in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. 

SF State scored its only run of the game in its half of the third inning.  Smith singled up the middle with one out and went to third on a two-out double by Almaraz.  He scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-1. 

The Otters (21-19, 14-16 CCAA) added two more runs in the third inning to increase their lead to 7-1.  They broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning to take an 11-1 lead, a margin which held true as the hosts won 11-1.

Jeff Owen (3-3) recorded the win, pitching 5 innings of two –hit ball, giving up one run while striking out five and walking three.  George finished game two with three hits while Nelson and Olson each had two hits apiece. 

Peter Reyes (4-3) picked up the loss for the Gators.  SF State managed just four hits in the night cap with Miguel Flores, Thomas Wood, Smith and Almaraz each picking up one hit apiece.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting doubleheader at SF State's Maloney Field.
