Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators split their home conference doubleheader with the visiting Cal St. Monterey Bay Otters this afternoon at Maloney Field winning the first game 13-7 before falling in the night cap 8-2. In the opener, the Gators pounded out 14 hits including three by freshman outfielder
Dante Smith.
The Otters took a 2-0 lead scoring once in the second and third innings. SF State sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning as the Gators scored 7 runs on just five hits as they took a 7-2 lead.
Cal St. Monterey Bay cut the Gator lead to 7-5 as the Otters scored three runs in the fifth inning. The Gators came back with a single run in the bottom of the inning.
AJ Almaraz walked to lead off the inning and went to second on a sacrifice by
Danny Souza. He went to third on a single by
Dante Smith and scored when
Dustin Wold reached on a fielder's choice to increase the Gators' lead to 8-5.
SF State (14-22, 11-17 CCAA) added two more runs in the sixth to take a 10-5 lead.
Andrew Suvunnachuen led off the inning with a double and went to third on a single by
Miguel Flores. He scored on a ground out by
Mark Lindsay.
Matt Quintero then hit a two-out double and scored on a successful double steal attempt.
The Otters added another run in the seventh on a lead-off home run by David Garcia, but the Gators came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Souza had a lead-off walk and went to second on a single by Smith. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Wold. Souza scored on a sacrifice fly by
Ivan Otsuka and then Smith scored on a two-out single by Suvunnachuen to give the Gators a 12-6 lead.
Cal St. Monterey Bay cut the Gators' lead to 12-7 as Tommy George scored on a one-out single by David Garcia in the top of the eighth inning. SF State added another insurance run in the 8
th to take a 13-7 lead.
Trae Lopez then shut down the Otters in the top of the ninth to preserve the 13-7 victory for the Gators.
Lopez recorded his first of the season as he pitched four innings of relief, giving up four this and two runs while striking out four and walking four.
Branden Petrangelo (4-4) picked up the win in the start for the Gators.
Aaron Appino (5-3) recorded the loss for the Otters while Garcia had four of the visitors' 15 hits while scoring twice and driving in three runs.
Besides Smith's three hits, the Gators had three players with two hits apiece in Otsuka, Suvunnachuen and Quintero.
In the night cap, the Gators took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Wold scored on a ground out by Suvunnachuen. Wold had a lead-off infield single and went to third on a single by Otsuka. SF State doubled its lead to 2-0 when Quintero had a lead-off double in the second and scored as Almaraz reached on an error by the Otters.
The score remained 2-0 Gators until the top of the fourth inning as Cal St. Monterey Bay scored four runs capped by a two-run single by Danny Nelson to give the visitors a 4-2 lead. They added two more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take an 8-2 lead.
Chris Neifert and Harold Zosel held the Gators to just two hits in the final four innings to preserve the 8-2 road victory for the Otters in the series finale. Steven Farnworth (3-1) recorded the win for the visitors. He pitched 5 innings, giving up five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three and walking one. Nelson, Chris Blanton and Jesse Olson each had three hits apiece to lead the Otters' hitting attack as the visitors had 17 hits in the finale game of the series.
Jack Jorgensen (2-4) picked up the loss for the Gators while Quintero and Wold had two hits apiece to lead the hosts' offensive attack.
SF State will return to the diamond this Tuesday afternoon at 2:30pm, when the Gators face Menlo College in a continuation of a suspended game from March 27. The game is tied at 1-1 going into the top of the second inning.
