Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Menlo College Oaks (24-21) rallied back from a six-run deficit to defeat the SF State Gators 10-9 this afternoon in a non-conference affair at SF State's Maloney Field. Will Pierce drove in Jonathan Ochoa with the game-winning run on a one-out double to left field in the top of the ninth inning. Tristan Heckerl picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief pitching while striking out two and walking one.
This was a continuation of a suspended game form March 27. The game was tied at 1-1 going into the top of the second inning when it resumed this afternoon.
SF State took a 4-1 lead in its half of the second inning.
Danny Souza and
Ivan Otsuka drew back-to-back one-out walks. Then
Dante Smith hit a 2-2 pitch down the left field line for a single which drove in Souza.
Andrew Suvunnachuen then hit a two-out single up the middle to score Otsuka with two outs. Still with two outs and the bases loaded, Smith scored on a wild pitch to give the Gators a 4-1 lead.
Menlo came back with two runs of its own on back-to-back RBI doubles by Collin Forgey and Will Piece to cut the hosts lead to 4-3.
The Oaks tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when Sam Shapiro crossed home plate on a ground out RBI by Forgey. Shapiro led off the inning with a walk and went to second on an infield single by John Hanley. Both Shapiro and Hanley advanced a base on a sacrifice by Ochoa.
SF State (14-23) retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Suvunnachuen walked to lead off the inning and went to third on a single by
Miguel Flores. He scored when
Mark Lindsay reached on a fielder's choice. The Gators increased their lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ivan Otsuka reached on a fielding error and went to second on a wild pitch. Otsuka then advanced to third on a bunt single by
Dante Smith and scored on a balk by the Oaks.
The hosts increased their lead to 9-4 with a three-run seventh inning.
Matt Quintero had a lead-off infield single. He went to second when
AJ Pianto reached base on an error. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Souza. Quintero then scored on a sacrifice fly by Otsuka. With two outs, Smith reached on another error by the Oaks which Pianto crossed home plate to increase the Gators' lead to 8-4. Still with two outs,
Thomas Wood single through the left side to put runners on first and second. Suvunnachuen hit a 3-2 pitch to center field for a RBI single which scored Smith and give the Gators a 9-4 lead.
Menlo would not go away as the Oaks scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning capped by a two-out three-run home run by Aaron Suarez-Lopez to cut the Gator lead to 9-8.
SF State had a chance to increase its lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, but they left the bases loaded. For the game, the Gators stranded 13 runners on base.
In the top of the ninth inning, Hanley had a lead-off triple to right field and scored the tying run on a single to left field by Ochoa. Ochoa advanced to second on the throw home and went to third on a balk. He then scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a one-out double by Pierce to give the Oaks a 10-9 lead.
Tristan Heckerl (2-5) retired the Gators in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the 10-9 come-from-behind victory for the Oaks. Hanley finished 4-for-5 scoring three times to lead the Oaks, who had 13 hits on the day.
Mark Johnson (0-1) recorded the loss in relief for the Gators.
The Gators managed 11 hits on the day led by Suvunnachuen who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Smith and Wood each had two hits for SF State, who returns to the diamond this weekend for a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series with the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors.
The series will begin with a single nine-inning game this Friday, April 20 at 3pm in Turlock, Calif. The series will move to SF State this Saturday, April 21 for a doubleheader at Maloney Field beginning at 11am. It will conclude with another single nine-inning game this Sunday, April 22 in Turlock at 11am.
