Box Score TURLOCK, Calif.--- For the second consecutive Friday afternoon on the road in the CCAA, the SF State Gators lost on a walk-off. This time it was Cal State Stanislaus' 5-4 as Skippy Ferreria hit a walk-off single up the middle to score Jordan Long with the game-winning run.
The Gators took an early 1-0 lead in their half of the third inning.
Dante Smith reached base when he was by a pitch. He stole second and went to third on a ground out by
Dustin Wold. Smith then scored on a failed pick-off attempt by the Warriors' pitcher.
Cal State Stanislaus tied in its half of the third as Ross Gonsalves hit a two-out double and crossed home plate when Colton Beatty reached on a Gator error to tie the game at 1-1.
The Warriors took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jordan Long reached second on a lead-off double and went to third on a sacrifice by Craig Beevers. Long scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Turay.
SF State tied the game at 2-2 in its half of the sixth.
Miguel Flores,
Mark Lindsay and
Matt Quintero loaded the bases on three straight singles.
Devon King then drove in Flores with the tying run on a sacrifice fly.
Miguel Flores' sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning gave the Gators a 3-2 lead. Smith led off the inning reaching on a Warrior error. He went to third on sacrifice by Wold.
AJ Almaraz walked and then
Andrew Suvunnachuen singled to load the bases to set the table up for Flores' sacrifice fly.
SF State doubled its lead to 4-2 on a sacrifice fly by
Danny Souza that drove in Lindsay. The freshman catcher led off the inning with a single through the right side and went to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Lindsay went to third when
Devon King reached on a one-out error by the Warriors and scored on Souza's sacrifice fly to center field.
The Warriors (22-17, 15-14 CCAA) came back and tied the game in their half of the eighth inning. Eli Davis walked with one out. Then Gonsalves hit 1-2 pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4.
SF State had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth. Wold had a lead-off single, but Almaraz was called out on batter's interference. With one out and Wold on first, Warrior reliever (Anthony Gottelli) induced the next Gator to ground out to an inning ending double play.
Long led off the bottom the ninth for the Warriors with a single up the middle. He went to second on a called balk on the Gators'
Peter Reyes. SF State then intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases for Skippy Ferreria. The Warrior second baseman came through as he hit a 3-1 single through the left side to drive in Long with the game-winning run for the 5-4 Cal State Stanislaus victory.
Gottelli (5-1) picked up the win in relief for the Warriors as he pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up just one hit and struck out one batter. Bryan Lemon started the game for Cal State Stanislaus and pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 7 hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out two and walking one. Shay Maltese pitched one inning of relief, giving up two hits and one unearned run.
Gonsalves finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while scoring twice for the Warriors and Long went 2-for-4 scoring two of the hosts' five runs.
Peter Reyes (4-4) recorded the loss in relief. He pitched one inning, giving up two hits and one run while striking out one and walking two.
Ryan DeJesus had a no-decision as he pitched 7.1 innings, giving up five hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four and walking one.
The Gators had 10 hits on the day led by
Mark Lindsay, who went 3-for-4 scoring a run. Wold, Suvunnachuen and Flores also had two hits on the day for SF State (14-24, 11-18 CCAA).
The two teams will continue the four-game weekend series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting doubleheader at SF State's Maloney Field. The series will conclude with a single nine-inning game in Turlock, Calif., this Sunday starting at 11am.
