SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting CSU San Bernardino Coyotes held on to defeat the SF State Gators to take game one of this weekend's four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series 5-3 this afternoon at Maloney Field. Ethan Chapman, Brandon Day and Darren Dworak drove in all five of the Coyotes' runs with Chapman leading the way going 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Brandon Day's two-run home run, his third of the season, gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Chapman had a lead-off single and crossed home plate on Day's one-out two-run home run to right field.
SF State tied the game in its half of the first inning.
Dustin Wold had a lead-off walk and scored when
Ivan Otsuka had a bunt single and went to second on an errant throw. Otsuka advanced to third on an
Andrew Suvunnachuen ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Miguel Flores to tie the game at 2-2.
CSU San Bernardino (23-15, 20-13 CCAA) retook the lead in the third inning. Chapman led off the inning with a solo home run down the right field line, his second of the season. With one out, Day singled to right center and stole second. Day scored the Coyotes' fourth run of the game on a two-out RBI single by Dworak to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.
The Gators cut the lead in half in the fifth inning.
AJ Almaraz walked to open up the bottom of the inning. He went to second on a sacrifice by Wold. Then Almaraz advanced to third on a ground out by Otsuka. The junior second baseman scored on a wild pitch to cut the Coyote lead to 4-3.
SF State (14-28, 11-22 CCAA) had a chance to tie the game in its half of the seventh inning.
AJ Pianto doubled to left center to lead off the inning and went to third on an Almaraz sacrifice bunt. Pianto was out on a run down when Wold reached on a fielder's choice, which Wold advanced to second. The Coyote starting pitcher, Casey McCarthy, then got the next Gator to ground out to keep the score at 4-3 visitors.
The Coyotes added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Dworak. Paul Eshleman doubled to right center to lead off the inning and sent to third on a passed ball. He then scored on Dworak's sacrifice fly to increase the Coyotes' lead to 5-3.
The Gators had another chance to tie the game in its half of the ninth inning.
Matt Quintero had a lead-off double. Then with two outs,
Adam Perez had pinch-hit infield single.
Dante Smith came in to pinch run for Perez and went to second when Wold walked. Josh Pond picked up his team leading fourth save as he induced the next Gator batter to fly out to center to preserve the Coyotes' 5-3 victory.
McCarthy (5-3) recorded the win for the Coyotes as he pitched 8.2 innings of six-hit ball while giving up three runs (two earned), striking out three and walking three.
Ryan DeJesus (1-4) picked up the loss for the Gators. The junior lefty pitched 7 innings, giving up 10 hits and four runs while striking out three and walking none. Freshman
Peter Reyes pitched two innings of relief, giving up three hits and one run while striking out one and walking one.
Besides Chapman's four hits, Day, Dworak and Edwin Mendoza each had two hits apiece for the Coyotes.
Quintero had two of the Gators' six hits on the day.
The two teams will continue this weekend's four-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting doubleheader at SF State's Maloney Field. The series will conclude with a single nine-inning game this Sunday, April 29 also at Maloney Field.
