Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to take game one 4-3 of this afternoon's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader with CSU San Bernardino at SF State's Maloney Field.  The Gators' rally fell short in the night cap as the visitors held on for a 6-4 victory.
 
The Coyotes took an early 1-0 lead in the opener as Ethan Chapman walked to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out double by Darren Dworak in the top of the first inning.  Mike Newell's one-out single to right field drove in Edwin Mendoza in the top of the second inning as the visitors doubled their lead to 2-0.
 
CSU San Bernardino added another run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Chapman which drove in Jake Pilkerton.  Pilkerton led off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball and went to third on a wild pitch.  He then scored on Chapman's RBI single to give the Coyotes a 3-0 lead.
 
Matt Quintero led off the Gators' seventh inning with an infield single and went to second when 
Devon King walked.  Quintero and King each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by 
AJ Almaraz.  Quintero scored on a ground out by 
Thomas Wood.  With two outs and the count 2-2, 
Dustin Wold hit a double to left center to drive in King and cut the Coyote lead to 3-2. 
 
The score remained 3-2 Coyotes until the bottom of the ninth inning.  King and Almaraz each walked to start the inning for SF State.  Wood then hit the first pitch he saw for a game-tying single to center field which drove in King.  Almaraz and Wood each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Wold.  The Coyotes then intentionally walked 
AJ Pianto to set the table for freshman 
Danny Souza.  The freshman infielder delivered as he hit a 1-2 pitch for a sacrifice fly to right field which drove in Almaraz with the game-winning run. 
 
SF State (15-29, 12-23 CCAA) had had eight hits in the opener led by 
Mark Lindsay's three hits. 
 
Senior pitcher 
Branden Petrangelo (5-5) picked up the win as he pitched his third complete game of the season.  He gave up 8 hits and three runs while striking out six and walking six. 
 
Josh Pond (0-1) recorded the loss in relief for the Coyotes.  Mark Mudron recorded a no-decision in the start for the visitors. 
 
Darren Dworak and Jake Pilkerton each had two hits apiece for the CSU San Bernardino. 
 
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Chapman scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Eshleman.  Chapman led off the inning with a single and went to second when Curtis Cassise reached on a bunt single.  He went to third on an error by the Gators and scored Eshleman's sacrifice fly.
 
CSU San Bernardino (24-16, 21-15 CCAA) added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Dworak which scored Cassise, who reached on a lead-off single. 
 
The visitors added four more runs on two two-run home runs by Mendoza in the sixth and Eshleman in the seventh to increase their lead to 6-0.
 
The Gators made it interesting in the seventh though as Quintero had a lead-off double and went to third when King reached on an error by the Coyotes.  With one out, Wood singled through the right side to drive in Quintero with the Gators' first run of the game.  Wold then hit a one-out two-run triple to right center to drive in King and Wood to cut the deficit to 6-3.  Then with two outs, 
Andrew Suvunnachuen hit a 2-1 pitch to left field for a run scoring single to drive in Wold with the fourth run of the inning.  Tony Guerra then induced the final Gator to fly out to center field to preserve the 6-4 Coyote win.
 
Bryant Hollingsworth (5-1) picked up the win for the Coyotes.  He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 8 hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four.  Eshleman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs while scoring a run.  Guerra recorded his second save of the season by pitching 0.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out one.
 
Jack Jorgensen (2-5) recorded the loss for SF State, pitching 6.0 innings of seven hit ball, giving up four runs (three runs) while striking out one and walking three.  Suvunnachuen had two of the Gators' nine hits in the night cap.
 The two teams will wrap up the four-game series with an 11am starting nine-inning game tomorrow morning at SF State's Maloney Field.
