Box Score SAN FRANCISCO--- CSU San Bernardino starting pitcher Cory Caruso pitched a complete game victory to key the Coyotes taking the series finale from the SF State Gators 3-2 this afternoon at Maloney Field on the campus of SF State. Caruso (3-4) scattered 7 hits while giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out 11 and walking two en route to the complete game win.
The Coyotes took a 2-0 lead in their half of the fifth inning as Mike Newell head a lead-off single. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ethan Chapman. With the count 3-1, Jake Pilkerton lined a double down the left field line to drive in Newell with the game's first run. Pilkerton advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Darren Dworak.
SF State cut the visitors' lead in half in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Dustin Wold led off the inning reaching first on an error by the Coyotes. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
AJ Almaraz. With two outs,
Miguel Flores hit the first pitch he saw for a single up the middle which drove in Wold with the Gators' first run of the game.
CSU San Bernardino (25-16, 22-14 CCAA) added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning as Edwin Mendoza scored on a one-out single by Newell to give the Coyotes a 3-2 lead. Mendoza reached base on a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Eric Dow. He then scored on Newell's RBI single up the middle.
The Gators made it interesting in their half of the ninth inning.
Matt Quintero walked to lead off the inning and went to second on a single by
Devon King. Quintero went to third when
Thomas Wood reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corner. With one out,
AJ Pianto was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wold drove in Quintero with a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the deficit to 3-2. With two outs and runners on first and second, Caruso struck out the final Gator batter to preserve the Coyote 3-2 victory.
Matt Haney and Newell each had two hits apiece to lead the Coyote hitting attack.
SF State (15-30, 12-24 CCAA) had 7 hits on the day with
Mark Lindsay leading the way going 3-for-4. King also had two hits for the Gators.
Eric Watts (0-6) recorded the loss, pitching 5 innings, giving up four hits and two runs while walking five.
Trae Lopez came in relief and gave up just one hit and one run while striking out four and walking one in 3.1 innings.
Peter Reyes pitched the final 0.2 innings giving up one hit.
The Gators will end the 2012 regular season next weekend with a four-game CCAA series with Cal State East Bay. The two teams will begin the four-game series with a single game at SF State's Maloney Field on Friday, May 4 at 3pm. The series will then move to Hayward, Calif., for a 11am starting doubleheader on Saturday, May 5. The weekend series will conclude with a 11am starting single game back at Maloney Field on Sunday, May 6. Prior to Sunday's game, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their own 11 in
