Box Score POMONA –Cal Poly Pomona came back from a 2-0 deficit to score 8 runs in the seventh and eighth inning to take game one of this weekend's four-game CCAA series with the visiting SF State Gators 8-2 at Scolinos Field in Pomona. Jordan Whitman's one-out two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the game-hitting for the Broncos (20-12, 13-12 CCAA).
The visiting Gators took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
Dustin Wold reached base on a lead-off walk. He went to second on a ground out by
AJ Almaraz and went to third on a passed ball. Wold scored the game's first run on an
Andrew Suvunnachuen ground out.
SF State (12-16, 9-12 CCAA) doubled its score in the top of the second inning. Senior catcher
Matt Quintero had a lead-off double and went to third on a
Devon King ground out. Quintero scored when
Thomas Wood reached on an error by the Broncos' infield to give the Gators a 2-0 lead.
The game remained 2-0 Gators until the Bronco seventh. Jenzen Torres led off the inning with a solo shot to left field. Joseph Eusebio reached on an infield single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Miller. Then Jordan Whitman hit a two-run home run to left center to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead.
Cal Poly Pomona broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning capped by Miller's grand slam home run to left field to increase the Broncos' lead to 8-2.
Erik Ruvalcaba (5-0) retired the Gators in order in the top of the ninth as he pitched his second complete game of the season. He gave up just four this and two runs (one earned) while striking out 8 and walking two. Eusebio led the Broncos' offensive attack going 2-for-4 scoring twice and driving in a run.
Ryan DeJesus (1-3) picked up the loss for SF State as he pitched 6.1 innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out two and walking two.
Miguel Flores had two of the Gators' four hits.
The two teams will continue this weekend's four-game series with a single game tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1pm at Scolinos Field in Pomona. The series will conclude this Saturday morning with an 11am starting doubleheader also in Pomona.
