Box Score POMONA--- Cal Poly Pomona's Kevin Bosson (2-4) pitched a seven-hit complete game shutout in the Broncos' 5-0 win over the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon in a CCAA game at Scolinos Field in Pomona. With the win, the Broncos improve to 21-12 overall and 14-12 in the CCAA including 13-4 at home.
Bosson pitched his second complete game of the season and first complete game shutout this afternoon. He struck out 9 Gator batters and walked two while giving up 7 hits.
Cal Poly Pomona took a 2-0 lead in its half of the first inning. Donald Walter reached base on a one-out single to center field. He went to third when Jenzen Torres reached on an error by the Gators. Joseph Eusebio singled to left field to drive in Walter with the game's first run. Still with one out, Chris Miller doubled home Torres to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
The Broncos added an insurance run in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. They added two more runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 5-0.
SF State (12-17, 9-13 CCAA) had a chance to score in its half of the second inning. With two outs,
Adam Perez walked and went to second on a single by
Devon King. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch, but were stranded on second and third as Bosson recorded one of his 9 strikeouts. The Gators had another chance to break Bosson's shutout up in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs again,
Ivan Otsuka singled to left field and went to second as
Dustin Wold was hit by a pitch. Then
AJ Almaraz singled up the middle which Otsuka tried to score on, but the Broncos' center fielder (Jordan Whitman) threw him out to preserve the shutout.
In SF State's ninth,
Mark Lindsay singled to center field with one out but was stranded there as Bosson struck out the next two Gator batters.
Walter finished the day 2-for-3 scoring twice while Miller also had two hits for the Broncos.
Eric Watts (0-4) recorded the loss for the Gators, pitching six innings, giving up 9 hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out five and walking one.
Jeff Clegg pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief for the visitors.
SF State managed seven hits with King and Otsuka leading the way each with two hits apiece.
The two teams will wrap up the four-game series with an 11am starting doubleheader tomorrow at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
