Petrangelo's Complete Game Victory Gives Gators' DH Split At CPP

Branden Petrangelo Had a Season High 8 Strikeouts En Route To His Third Win of the Season
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  POMONA--- SF State senior pitcher Branden Petrangelo's second complete game victory of the season assisted in the Gators' road conference doubleheader split with the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.  Petrangelo struck out a season high 8 batters en route to the Gators' 3-2 series finale victory.  SF State lost the opener 20-4.
 
In the series finale, the Broncos scored first in the bottom of the third inning when Mike Santora had a one-out double.  He scored on a two-out Jenzen Torres' double to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.  Torres then scored on a Joseph Eusebio single to double Cal Poly Pomona's lead to 2-0.

The score remained 2-0 hosts until the Gator top of the sixth inning.  Dante Smith and Dustin Wold led off the inning with back-to-back singles.  They each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by AJ Almaraz.  Smith scored SF State's first run of the game and cut the visitors' lead to 2-1 on a ground out RBI by Miguel Flores which Wold advanced to third. 

Then with a full count, freshman Mark Lindsay drove in Wold with a two-out single up the middle with the game-tying run.  Senior Thomas Wood came in to pinch run for Lindsay and to second on a wild pitch.  He then scored with what proved to be the game-winning run on a Matt Quintero's single through the right side.

The Broncos had a threat in the bottom of the inning as Humberto Tovalin reached second on a two-out two-base error by the Gators.  Petrangelo then induced the next Bronco to fly out to Devon King in right for the third out. 

The senior right handed pitcher then retired the Broncos in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the Gator 3-2 win.  With the win, Petrangelo improved to 3-3 on the season as he pitched 7 innings of 8 hit ball while striking out 8 and giving up two runs.

In the first game of this afternoon's doubleheader, Cal Poly Pomona (22-13, 15-13 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead in its half of the first inning.  Mike Santora led off the frame reaching base on a walk.  He went to second on a single by Donald Walter.  With one out, Joseph Eusebio drove in Santora with the game's first run.  Then a double steal attempt by Walter and Eusebio gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead.  Chris Miller's RBI single scored Eusebio to give the hosts a 3-0 lead. 

SF State came back in its half of the second inning.  Mark Lindsay led off the inning with a single and later came to score on a two-out single by Danny Souza.  The Gators cut the Bronco lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning.  Dustin Wold had a lead-off single and went to second on fielding error by the Broncos.  Wold then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Flores

Cal Poly Pomona made it 4-2 Broncos on a Jenzen Torres' single that drove in Walter, who reached base on a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. 

The Gators came once again cut the hosts lead in half on a RBI double by AJ Pianto which drove in Matt Quintero (who reached on a lead-off single) to make it 4-3 Cal Poly Pomona. 

The hosts scored three runs in the fourth to take a 7-3 and broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning to take a 11-3 lead.

Flores' team leading 9th double of the season drove in AJ Almaraz in the Gator seventh to cut the deficit to 11-4. 

Cal Poly Pomona added four more runs in the 7th and five more in the 8th to increase its lead to 20-4.
Geoff Broussard (9-0) picked up the win for the Broncos.  He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 8 hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out five and walking two.  The Broncos had 19 hits led by Walter's four hits.

Trae Lopez (1-3) recorded the loss for the Gators with Flores leading the Gator offense driving in two of SF State's four runs.

SF State (13-18, 10-14 CCAA) will return to the diamond this Tuesday, April 10 as the Gators travel to Atherton, Calif., for a non-conference game with the Menlo College Oaks. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30pm.  They will then return home this Friday, April 13 at 3pm as the Gators begin a four-game conference series with Cal State Monterey Bay with a single nine-inning game at Maloney Field.
