SAN FRANCISCO-- SF State senior right-handed pitcher
Branden Petrangelo ended his collegiate career on a high note this weekend in the Gators' four-game CCAA series with Cal State East Bay. Petrangelo pitched his fourth complete game of the season in the Gators' Senior Day 4-2 victory. He struck out two batters and walked two while scattering 7 hits and giving up two runs (one earned) as he improved to 6-5 on the season. The Oakley, Calif., native started the weekend recording his 5th save of the season in Friday's 6-5 win over the Pioneers.
Kyle Zozaya gave Cal State East Bay an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as he crossed home plate on a single David Castillo which was bobbled by the Gators. The third baseman reached base on a one-out walk. He went to second on a Jake Davis single. Then he scored when Castillo singled through the left side and came around to score on the error.
The Pioneers did not hang on to that lead long as SF State broke out with a three-run third inning to take the lead for good.
Dustin Wold hit an infield single with one out and scored on
Sam Wilkins' run scoring double to left field.
Andrew Suvunnachuen then singled through the left side to put runners on the corner still with one out. Suvunnachuen advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then with the count 2-0 on
Miguel Flores, the senior infielder hit the next pitch for a two-run double to right field to give the Gators a 3-1 lead.
Matt Quintero's RBI double with two-out scored Flores in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Gators' lead to 4-1. Flores reached base on a two-out walk.
Petrangelo held the Pioneers in check until the top of the ninth inning. Andrew Woolfe led off the Pioneer ninth with a solo home run to left field to cut the Gator lead to 4-2. Jordan Wilder walked and then Petrangelo struck induced the next Pioneer to line out to third for the first out. Davis then hit a single to put runners on first and second with one out. Castillo reached base on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher which retired Davis at second. With two outs and runners on the corner, Petrangelo forced the last Pioneer batter to pop out to second base for the game's final out.
Bryce Miller (1-9) recorded the loss for the Pioneers (18-30, 12-26 CCAA). Miller pitched 6 innings, giving up 7 hits and four runs while striking out 6 and walking two.
Davis and Castillo each had two of Cal State East Bay's 7 hits.
Flores finished the day driving in two of the Gators' four runs while him and six other batters had one hit apiece for SF State (17-32, 14-26 CCAA).
