SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Evan Peters' one-out two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth gave the NCAA Division I Santa Clara Broncos a 7-5 non-conference victory over the visiting SF State Gators this evening at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara.
SF State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Gators took advantage of two walks.
Dante Smith and
Ivan Otsuka opened the game with back to back walks. Smith advanced to third on a wild pitch. He came around to score when
Mark Lindsay grounded out to second.
The Gators added another run in their half of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Matt Quintero and
AJ Pianto opened up the inning with back to back singles. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by
Nick McFarland. Quintero scored on a sacrifice fly by
AJ Almaraz to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Santa Clara tied the game in its half of the fourth inning. With two outs, Stephen Takahashi hit a single up the middle and then scored on Andrew Biancardi's fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
The game did not stay that way long as the Gators took the lead back with a two-run fifth inning. With two outs, Smith and
Thomas Wood each walked. Then with the count full, Lindsay hit a run scoring single to center field to drive in Smith and put runners on the corners.
Miguel Flores then walked, but the ball got past the catcher and Wood crossed home to give SF State a 4-2 lead.
Santa Clara (23-20) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Justin Viele led off the inning with a walk. He went to second on a ground out by Greg Harisis and scored on a single to right field by Lucas Herbst to cut the visitors' lead to 4-3.
The game remained that way until the Broncos' seventh inning. Viele led off the inning with a double the line and went to third on a bunt single by Harisis. He then scored the tying run when Herbst grounded into a double play to make the score 4-4.
Once again, the Gators retook the lead in the next half inning as Pianto had a lead-off single to right field. The junior first baseman went to second on another sacrifice by McFarland. He then scored on a two-out single to center field by
Danny Souza to give the Gators a 5-4 lead.
Then in the bottom of the ninth inning, Viele was hit by a pitch with one out and went to second on a two-out single by Herbst. Viele then scored when Matt Ozanne reached on a Gator error to tie the game at 5-5 and to send the game into extra innings.
The Gators had a chance to retake the lead in their half of the tenth. Pianto had a one-out single to left field, his fourth hit of the game. He went to second on a two-out infield single by Almaraz, but Bronco reliever (Paul Twining) struck out the next Gator batter to keep the score at 5-5.
With one out in the bottom of the frame, Quinton Perry reached base on an infield single. Zach Looney came into pinch run for him and he scored on the next pitch as Evan Peters hit the first pitch he saw for walk-off two-run home run to left field.
Twining (5-4) picked up the win in relief as he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out one. He was one of four Bronco pitchers on the evening who gave up 12 hits to SF State and five runs.
Santa Clara had 13 hits themselves with five different Broncos getting two hits each led by Peters and Biancardi, who each had two-run home runs. Viele scored three of the hosts' seven runs in the game.
Jack Jorgensen (2-6) recorded the loss for SF State as he was one of four pitchers for the Gators.
Ryan DeJesus started the game went pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He had 22 pitches of which 17 were for strikes.
Peter Reyes pitched six innings of relief, giving up 9 hits and four runs while striking out one and walking two.
Branden Petrangelo pitched the ninth inning, giving up one hit and one unearned run while walking one.
Besides Pianto's four hits, Lindsay had three hits and Souza had two. Smith scored two of the Gators' five runs with Wood, Pianto and
Matt Quintero scoring the other three.
SF State finishes the 2012 regular season with a 17-33 overall record. This was the Gators' third game against NCAA Division I competition, which they went 1-2. SF State defeated Nevada 5-4 on March 7 and lost to San Francisco 8-7 on March 21.
