ROHNERT PARK, Calif.---- Playing in their fifth straight match away from home, it was the visiting SF State Gators falling 2-0 to the Sonoma State Seawolves this afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park, Calif. The Gators will host Cal Maritime this Sunday, Sept. 16 at 11:30am in their home opener in a non-conference match at Cox Stadium on SF State's campus.
Sonoma State outshot the Gators 15-9 including 9-3 in the first half while also holding a 6-1 advantage in shot on goal attempt. The two teams each recorded five corner kicks.
The Seawolves recorded three shot on goal attempts in the first half including two by Nico Spann that were stopped by the Gators' Anthony Roriguez, the first one in the 17
th minute and the last in the 33
rd minute.
SF State (0-4-1, 0-2-1 CCAA) had just three shot attempts in the first half with the first one coming in the 9
th minute off the foot of
Jairo Magana which went wide left. Then in the 21
st minute,
Luis Fidel Medina's shot attempt went high and one minute
Jared Magaoay's attempt went wide left.
The Gators had a chance to take the lead in the final minutes of the first half but they were called offside after a corner kick by
Robert Gilbert to keep the score scoreless heading into the half.
SF State played the Seawolves (4-1, 3-0 CCAA) evenly in the second half with each team recording six shot attempts.
The Gators'
Anthony Rodriguez recorded one of his season high 6 saves in the first 30 seconds of the second half as he stopped Anthony Dib's attempt to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The visitors had two chances in the 55
th minute to take the lead but
Kevin Johnson and
Eilmaz Sarli's attempts went wide of the goal.
Sonoma State took the 1-0 lead in the 64
th minute as Taylor Varnadore connected on his 5
th goal of the season on a shot from 10 yards out into the net.
SF State went to tie the match at 1-1, but
Edgar Villagrana and Magana each had their shot attempts blocked in the 68
th minute. Five minutes later,
Robert Gilbert had his chance to tie the match stopped by Beau Diaz.
Then in the 83
rd minute, Sonoma State sealed the win as Brenton Frame connected on a cross from Varnadore to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead, a margin they would hold onto for the victory.
The Gators will begin a four-game home stand this Sunday at 11:30, when they host Cal Maritime in a non-conference match
