Box Score SAN FRANCISCO-- Six different players scored goals as the SF State Gators won their home opener 6-0 over the visiting Cal Maritime Keelhaulers this afternoon at Cox Stadium.
Jose Monje assisted on two of those six goals for the Gators while
Anthony Rodriguez had two saves en route to the shutout.
“This will give us some momentum going into this coming weekend's two home conference matches,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “I really liked the movement of the ball in the first half and we just need to continue on getting everyone involved.”
SF State (1-4-1) came out on fire right away as
Sam Merritt connected on his first goal of the season off a cross from
Jose Monje in the third minute. Six minutes later, the Gators doubled their scored as
Robert Gilbert connected on Monje's second assist of the match.
The hosts continued their attack as
Sasha Chalak's shot went high and Monje's went wide left in the next two minutes. Then in the 14
th minute, Merritt's shot was stopped by the Keelhaulers' Kyle Carpenter.
Jose Vitela increased the Gators' lead in the 16
th minute as his shot from 30 yards out saw the back of the goal for his first goal of the season.
The Gators took a 4-0 advantage in the 19
th minute as
Jared Magaoay connected on a ball from
Jorge Valadas. SF State ended its scoring in the 29
th minute as
Jairo Magana connected on an assist from Merritt give the Gators a 5-0 lead heading into the half.
Kevin Johnson's breakaway early in the second half gave the Gators a 6-0 lead, a lead they would not relinquish as they cruised to the non-conference win.
SF State outshot the Keelhaulers 42-3 including 12-2 in shots on goal. The hosts also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks over Cal Maritime (0-3).
The Gators will continue their home stand this Friday, September 21 at 12:30pm, when they host Cal State San Bernardino in a conference match. This is a rematch of the match that happened on September 9 in San Bernardino in which the two teams tied 0-0.
