SAN FRANCISCO---- Cal State San Bernardino recorded its fifth shutout of the season by blanking the SF State Gators 2-0 this afternoon at SF State's Cox Stadium. With the win, the Coyotes improve to 2-0-5 overall and 2-0-3 in the CCAA while the Gators fall to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the CCAA.
The Gators did outshoot their guest 15-9 including 10-2 in the second half. The hosts also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and 5-2 in shot on goals attempts.
Jared Magaoay's attempt to put the Gators up early in the match went wide left in the sixth minute of the match. SF State had its second shot attempt blocked by the Coyote defense in the 19
th minute.
The Coyotes came right back two minutes late and saw both the attempts by Leo Mendoza go wide of the net.
Cal State Bernardino's defense came up big again nit eh the 32
nd minute as the Coyotes blocked both
Robert Gilbert and
Edgar Villagrana's attempt to give the hosts the lead.
Ricardo Velasco connected on what proved to be the game-winner of the visitors in the 39
th minute as he scored on a cross from Lee Nishanian for the match's first goal. This was his third goal of the season.
Gabriel Quintero's attempt to double the score for the Coyotes went high in the final minutes of the half to send the match into halftime with a 1-0 Cal State San Bernardino lead.
SF State came out strong in the second half as
Jairo Magana's attempt to tie the score at one apiece went high in the 48
th minute, and then
Chris Behroozian's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Coyotes' Tanner Olinger in the 51
st minute.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 57
th minute as Martin Esqueda scored his first goal of the season on a free kick from 30-yards out to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.
The Gators had several chances in the final 33 minutes of the match to cut into the Coyote lead, but they either went wide right, wide left, high or were stopped by the Cal State San Bernardino's goalkeeping duo of Tanner Olinger and Jeff Salt.
Olinger finished with three saves in 67 minutes for the guests while Salt had two saves in the final 23 minutes.
Anthony Rodriguez had two saves in goal for the hosts, who will return to the pitch this Sunday morning at 11:30am when they host UC San Diego in another conference match.
The Tritons defeated the Gators 1-0 on September 7 in La Jolla, Calif.
