Gators and Tritons Play To A Scoreless Tie

Anthony Rodriguez Had A Season High 8 Saves in Goal for the Gators This Afternoon en route to his third shutout

SAN FRANCISCO----    The SF State Gators and the visiting UC San Diego Tritons played to a scoreless double overtime tie this afternoon in a CCAA match at SF State's Cox Stadium.  Anthony Rodriguez had eight saves en route to his second shutout in goal for the Gators.
 
UC San Diego (4-2-2, 3-1-2 CCAA) outshot the Gators 21-17 including 14-9 in the final 65 minutes of the match. The Tritons held an 8-2 advantage in shot on goal attempts and a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. 
 
UC San Diego had the first chance to take an early lead as Tsuka Haroush's shot was stopped by the Gators' Rodriguez in the 8th minute.  Then five minutes later, Rodriguez stopped Kian Malek's attempt to give the visitors the lead. 
 
The Gators had their chance to take the lead in the 14th minute, but Sam Merritt's shot sailed high followed by Robert Gilbert's shot at the 16th minute which also went high.
 
Then in the 40th minute, Taylor Wirth attempt to give the Tritons (4-2-2, 3-1-2 CCAA) go wide right to send the match scoreless into the half.
 
Merritt's shot on goal attempt early in the second half was stopped by the Tritons' Cameron McElfresh in the 51st minute.  The Tritons came right down the field following that Gator attempt, but Rodriguez came up big stopping Sam Ball's attempt in the 54th minute. 
 
SF State had another attempt stopped by McElfresh, this time in the 65th minute as Luis Mendoza came up short to give the hosts the 1-0 lead. 
 
The Gators had three attempts from the 72nd minute to the 80th minute either go wide right or left off the feet of Edgar Villagrana and Robert Gilbert.
 
UC San Diego had the final attempt of regulation sail wide right in the 84th minute to send the match into overtime.
 
There were just two attempts in the first overtime period one by each team.  In the sixth minute of the overtime, the Tritons' Haroush attempt went wide right.  Then right before the overtime period ended Eric Espinoza's attempt sailed high to send the match into the second overtime period.
 
In the final 10 minutes, the visitors had four attempts to earn the golden goal but each was either blocked by the Gator defense or stopped by Rodriguez as the match ended in a scoreless tie.
 
SF State will continue its four-match home stand this Friday, September 28th at 12:30pm, when the Gators host Cal State East Bay in a CCAA match at Cox Stadium.
