SAN FRANCISCO---- The visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers used two unanswered goal in the 75
th minute to defeat the SF State Gators 3-1 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match at Cox Stadium on SF State's campus. Arthur Ethel connected on what proved to be the game-winner off a ball from Javier Martin.
SF State (1-6-2, 0-4-2 CCAA) had a chance to take an early lead but Rene Martinez stopped
Jose Monje's shot on goal attempt in the ninth minute. The match remained scoreless until the 32
nd minute, when Kellen Crow scored his first goal of the season off a ball from Chris Lara and Florian Reppin to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Cal State East Bay's Ray Suarez went to double the Pioneer advantage but the Gators'
Anthony Rodriguez recorded one of his three saves on the day. SF State had two chances to tie the match before halftime, but
Hayden Roberts' attempt was stopped by Martinez and
Kevin Johnson's attempt sailed wide right to keep the score at 1-0 visitors.
Early in the second half was evenly played until the 64
th minute, when the Gators'
Sam Merritt tied the match at 1-1 off a cross from
Robert Gilbert which
Jose Monje tapped to Merritt for the game-tying score.
Three minute later it looked like the hosts were going to take the lead, but Bryce Bookhamer stopped
Robert Gilbert's attempt to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.
Gilbert had another attempt to give the Gators a lead sail high in the 74
th minute. Two minutes later, Ethel connected on what proved to be the game-winner for the Pioneers off a ball from Javier Martin.
SF State had a chance to tie the match, but
Jason Borges' shot was blocked by the Pioneer defense.
Cal State East Bay (2-4-2, 1-3-2 CCAA) sealed the win on an unassisted goal by Martin in the 79
th minute.
The Gators outshot their hosts 20-13 including 5-3 in shot on goal attempts. They also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Martinez had three saves in goal for the visitors in the first half while Bookhamer had two in the second half.
SF State will begin a season long five-match road trip this Sunday, September 30 in Pomona, Calif., for an 11:30am starting conference with Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos defeated Cal St. Monterey Bay 2-1 this afternoon in Pomona.
