POMONA—For the second consecutive Sunday, the SF State Gators' men's soccer played to a draw in their CCAA match. This time, the Gators were down 1-0 late in regulation when
Eilmaz Sarli connected on a header from 7-yards out off a cross from
Chris Behroozian to send the match into overtime. In the two overtime periods, the two teams could not get the ball into the net as the match ended in a draw.
SF State (1-6-3, 0-4-3 CCAA) outshot its hosts 18-16 including 15-11 in regulation and also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks and 6-4 advantage in shot on goals.
Anthony Rodriguez had two saves in goal for the Gators while Kris Minton had three saves in the first half for Cal Poly Pomona. In the final 65 minutes, Andrew Todd recorded two saves in goal for the Broncos (3-4-2, 1-4-2 CCAA).
In the first 45 minutes of the match saw the Gators hold a 9-2 advantage in shot attempts with the first one coming off the foot of
Jose Monje in the fifth minute of the match. SF State had two more attempts in the next two minutes but
Sam Merritt's attempt was blocked and
Jared Magaoay's attempt was stopped by the Broncos' Minton.
SF State had another chance in the 31
st minute, but Minton made a diving stop of the Gators' penalty kick attempt. The visitors had three more attempts in the final 10 minutes of the half to take the lead, but
Eilmaz Sarli's,
Sam Merritt's and
Jorge Valadas' attempts all sailed high to send the match into the half 0-0.
The Broncos came out aggressive in the second half as they had four shot attempts in the first four minutes of the new stanza either go wide left, wide right or hit the crossbar. Then in the 49
th minute, Ian Trantow gave the hosts a 1-0 lead when he connected off Christopher Rosales' missed attempt and Justyn Peeples' cross.
The match remained 1-0 Cal Poly Pomona until the final seconds when
Eilmaz Sarli's header from 7-yards out off a cross from
Chris Behroozian sent the game into overtime as SF State tied the score at 1-1.
In the first overtime, the Broncos had the first three shot attempts of the 10-minute period. Elliott Bonde's attempt went wide right in the 93
rd minute followed by Tony Bichai's attempt that was blocked in the 96
th minute and Rosales' attempt that went wide left. SF State's only attempt was by
Luis Fidel Medina which went wide left in the 98
th minute to send the match into the second overtime period.
Juan Sanchez's attempt to give the Gators the sudden death victory was stopped by Andrew Todd in the 105
th minute. Cal Poly Pomona's Brandon Cortez had both of his attempts for the golden goal be blocked by the Gator defense to end the match in a 1-1 tie.
The Gators will continue their season long five-match road trip back down in Southern California as they face Cal State Dominguez Hills in a 7pm starting match in Carson, Calif.
