Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – Despite recording more shots than their hosts (22-5) and more corner kicks (6-2), the SF State Gators' men's soccer team dropped another heartbreaker this evening 2-1 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. Grimur Grimsson connected off a cross from Sebastian Zuniga with less than 45 seconds left in the match for the game winner for the Academy of Art University Urban Knights.
Academy of Art (1-2) struck first as Carlos Hernandez scored from 18-yards out off a ball from Brady Fiero to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
The Urban Knights did not hold on to the lead long as the Gators'
Sasha Chalak connected on a header off a cross from
Luis Fidel Medina in the 12
th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
SF State (0-2) was on the onslaught the rest of the half, but its shots either went wide right or high to keep the score tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Gators continued to dominate the match in the second half as they outshot the Urban Knights 12-3 in the second half including 4-0 in shot on goals attempt, but they could not get the ball in the net.
Then at the 89:22 mark of the second half, Grimur Grimsson connected on a corner cross from Sebastian Zuniga for the game-winner.
SF State will continue its season opening five-game road trip this weekend as the Gators begin their CCAA season with a pair of games in Southern California. They will face UC San Diego this Friday, September 7
th at 4:30pm in La Jolla, Calif. Then this Sunday, September 8
th, SF State will travel to San Bernardino, Calif., for an 11:30am kickoff with the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino.
