ARCATA, Calif.-- The visiting SF State Gators (8-5, 5-4 CCAA) outscored the Humboldt State Lumberjacks 9-2 in the final four minutes of this evening conference game at Lumberjack Arena to fuel their 59-52 victory over the Lumberjacks. Nicole Hicks led the Gators with a game high 21 points while Farrah Shokoor recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
"All year we talk about mental toughness and this evening, we displayed it," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. "As a team we fought back from tremendous challenges."
Besides Hicks' 21 points and Shokoor's double-double, Angela Van Sickel chipped in 21 points for the Gators.
Lisa Petty had 13 points and six assists to lead the way for Humboldt State (7-8, 3-6 CCAA), who also turned the ball over 16 times including 10 by Gator steals.
The first half was evenly played with six lead changes and four ties. The Gators held the largest lead in the half with 1:53 to go in the first stanza when Shokoor's lay-up gave the visitors the 21-17 lead.
Van Sickel's lay-up gave SF State a 25-22 heading into the locker room.
Humboldt State's defense stepped early in the second half as the Lumberjacks took a 32-28 capped by a Elle Anderson lay-up in the first five minutes.
Shokoor's lay-up tied the score at 37-37 with 11:43 to go, but Humboldt State came right back and took a 41-37 lead on a lay-up by Petty.
Angela Van Sickel's three tied the game at 50-50 with 4:22 left on the clock. Anderson's lay-up gave the Lumberjacks the lead back, which was the last time they held the lead.
SF State finished the game outscoring its hosts 9-0 to take the 59-52 victory.
"We are a good team, overall, however with Nicole Hicks laying the way she did this eveningt, we became an even better team," said Wallace. "As a team, we need the same effort against a really good Cal Poly Pomona this Saturday."
Cal Poly Pomona defeated Sonoma State 62-48 this evening in Pomona.
