Gators Return Home To Winning Ways

William Overton, Jr. Had a Season High 24 Points in the Gators' Win Over UCSD

 SAN FRANCISCO---  The SF State Gators returned to its winnings ways as they defeated the visiting UC San Diego Tritons, 70-55, this evening at The Swamp. This was the Gators' fifth straight win at home as they improved to 9-6 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA. William Overton, Jr. led the Gators with 24 points while Calvin Otiono chipped in 21 points. SF State will host CSU San Bernardino tomorrow evening at 7:30pm PST at the Swamp.
 
“We played a good 40 minutes this evening as we defended with energy,” said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  “William Overton, Jr. and Calvin Otiono led us in scoring this evening.” “They both our putting a lot of extra time in the gym and it is paying off for them.”
 
Overton led the Gators with a game high 24 points as he went 9-for-12 from the field and connected on three of his four attempts from beyond the arc.  He also was a perfect three-for-three from the line.  Otiono added 21 points to go along with his five assists and one steal while Winston Demmin chipped in 10 points. 
 
The first half was evenly played as neither team pulled away from the other.  The Tritons (5-9, 4-7 CCAA) took their largest lead, 22-16, at the 7:52 mark of the half on a three by Tyler McGrath. 
 
SF State ended the half outscoring its visitors 15-7 including scoring the last basket of the half on a tip-in by Brandon Tatum to give the hosts a 31-29 lead heading into the locker room.
 
The Gators continued that momentum into the second half as they opened the new stanza outscoring UC San Diego 17-9 to take a 48-38 lead in the first eight minutes. 
 
The Tritons cut that lead to 51-45 on a three by Hunter Walker with 9:26 left in the half, but the Gators increased their lead back to double digits (58-47) on an Otiono jumper in the next three minutes.
 
They increase that lead to 70-50 with 1:16 to go and cruised to the 70-55 victory.
 
Tyler McGrath finished with 15 points for the visitors, who were held to just 40% shooting from the field including 30.8% from three's. 
 
SF State will host Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow evening in another CCAA contest at The Swamp beginning at 7:30pm PST.  The Coyotes defeated Sonoma State 78-71 this evening in Rohnert Park.
