Box Score ROHNERT PARK--- The SF State Gators lost 1-0 to the Sonoma State Seawolves this afternoon in a CCAA match-up at Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park, Calif. Taylor Varnadore scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 74
th minute from 12-yards out off a ball from Nico Spann.
“We played very well this afternoon, unfortunately we were unlucky at the end when the Seawolves scored their goal,” said SF State head coach Joe Hunter. “We responded from our match on Friday and this afternoon's match was evenly played.”
Sonoma State (5-4-3, 4-4-2 CCAA) swept the season series from the Gators as they won earlier this fall, 1-0 in San Francisco.
SF State held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, but the Seawolves held a 17-8 advantage in shot attempts including 4-0 in shots on goal.
The visitors had two chances to take the lead in the 22
nd minutes stopped by Sonoma State's defense. The first one at the 22:23 mark by
Cole Dimond and the second one nine seconds later off the foot of
Zackary Pinnix.
The Seawolves' Taylor Varnadore had Sonoma State's first attempt for a goal stopped by the Gators' Reichl in the 28
th minute.
With less than a minute left in the half, Sonoma State's Kelly Davila saw his attempt to give the hosts a 1-0 lead sail high to send the match into the half scoreless.
SF State had three chances to take the lead in the 69
th minute either sail high, wide right or be blocked by the Seawolf defense. The first one at 68:01, when Pinnix's shot was blocked. Then ten seconds later,
Emmanuel Serrano's shot sailed high. With a little over 20 minutes left in the match,
Juan Sanchez saw his attempt to give the Gators the lead go wide right.
Three minutes later, Varnadore scored his fourth goal of the season for the Seawolves off a ball from Spann to give Sonoma State a 1-0 lead.
SF State did not attempt another shot in the final 17 minutes of the match as the Seawolves' defense came up big for the hosts.
Colt Reichl recorded three saves in goal for the Gators (3-8-1, 2-7-1 CCAA). SF State will return home next weekend for a pair of CCAA matches. The Gators will host Cal State East Bay this Friday, October 18 at 12:30pm. Then a week from today, the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus will come to Cox Stadium for an 11:30am starting match with SF State.
