Second Half Surge Keys Pioneers' Win over SF State

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO --- The visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers scored two unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the second half to key their 3-0 CCAA road victory over the SF State Gators this afternoon at Cox Stadium. Rica Guerra assisted on both of those goals and Bryce Bookhamer had seven saves in goal for the Pioneers.

"We need to keep playing for each other," said SF State head coach Joe Hunter. "We just need to take care of business and stay positive."

Each team recorded 16 shot attempts with the Gators (3-9-1, 2-8-1 CCAA) holding a slim 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. SF State also had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Nick Harb had a chance early in the first half to give the hosts a 1-0 lead, but the Pioneer defense blocked his attempt.

Cal State East Bay had three chances to take the lead, but Colt Reichl stopped all of them including the last one in the 26th minute off the foot of Rey Suarez off a corner kick.

The Gators' Jakob Velega had the only shot on goal attempt by the hosts stopped by Bookhamer in the 43rd minute to send the match scoreless into the half.

In the second minute of the second half, Trey James gave Cal State East Bay (3-9-1, 3-7-1 CCAA) a 1-0 lead as he connected on a ball from Jesus Leon and Rica Guerra.

SF State came right down the pitch after the goal and had two chances to tie the match stopped by Bookhamer. The first one in the 48th minute off the foot of Sam Merritt and the second one twenty seconds later off the foot of Kevin Johnson.

Cal State East Bay doubled its lead as Chris Franco connected on Guerra's second assist in the 50:23 mark of the match.

SF State had several chances to cut into the Pioneer lead, but Bookhamer stopped them including in the 73rd minute as he recorded one his seven saves stopping Matias Rodriguez' attempt to score for the hosts.

With 14 minutes left in the match, Kellen Crow sealed the win for the visitors with an unassisted goal.

Reichl had 9 saves in goal for the Gators, who will host Cal State Stanislaus this Sunday, October 20 in another CCAA match-up. The Warriors defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 in double overtime this afternoon in Seaside. Earlier this season in Turlock, the Gators defeated the Warriors 2-0.
