SEASIDE, Calif.— The visiting SF State Gators fell 2-0 this afternoon in a CCAA match-up to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside, Calif. Andreas Gronvik assisted on both of the Otters' goals, the first one in the 24th minute and the second in the 50th.
The Otters (5-3-1, 3-3-1 CCAA) outshot SF State 11-5 including 3-1 in shots on goal with Evan Drake recording the only save for the hosts en route to his third shutout of the season. With the win, the Otters improve to 4-1-1 at home
SF State's Colt Reichl had two saves in goal for the visitors.
"We need to focus about what we need to do to get the job done," said SF State head coach Joe Hunter. "We're workign hard but we are not catching the breaks right now."
The Otters' Servando Perez had a chance to give Cal State Monterey Bay an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, but the Gator defense stopped the ball from going into the net.
The match remained scoreless until the 24th minute when Juan Montellano connected on a ball from George Plakorus and Andreas Gronvik to put the hosts up 1-0.
SF State had two chances to tie the match late in the first half but the Gators could not capitalize. The first one came in the 37th minute when Sam Merritt had his shot on goal stopped by the Otters' Drake. Then with two minutes left in the half, Hayden Roberts saw his shot sail high to send the match into the half with an Otter 1-0 lead.
Servando Perez doubled the Otter lead in the 50th minute as he connected on a ball from Gronvik and Madrigal.
The Gators had a chance to cut into the Otter lead, but Emmanuel Serrano's shot was blocked in the 61st minute.
Two minutes later, the Otters went on the offensive attack as Servando Perez had his shot on goal stopped by the Gators' Reichl. Right after that, Gronvik saw his attempt to give the visitors a 3-0 lead hit the post.
SF State (3-5-1, 2-4-1 CCAA) had two chances late in the match to score but the first one in the 73rd minute sailed wide off the foot of Serrano. Then with 14 minutes left, Andrew Ogilvy saw his shot also sail high as the Otters hung on for the 2-0 win.
The Gators will return home this Sunday, October 6 as they will face the Chico State Wildcats in a 11:30am starting match at Cox Stadium on SF State's campus. The Wildcats will host Cal State San Bernardino later on this afternoon in Chico, Calif.
